The Boston Mining Company was another of the very early, pioneering companies in the Keweenaw, formed in February, 1845. It's operations were two miles east of Agate Harbor, part of original lease no. 15. The company had 5 first rate log buildings, boats, tents, horses and a force of 12 men.
There were 2 working shafts, and in 1845, the company was famous for producing an 800 lb. mass of copper which was sent to Boston for public display.
One of the original trustees of the company was a Joab Bernard, and I believe that the street of the same name in Copper Harbor today (one block north of the highway) was named in his honor.
