Around the village
Bicycle race, dated 1895. In the back is the old Copper Range Hotel, located at the corner of 6th and Elm Streets, across from the current fire station. The restaurant sign advertises "Meals at all Hours".
The famous Calumet & Hecla band, about 1900.
Front of the Calumet Hotel, located across Calumet Avenue from Washington School. It is now a parking lot for the faculty. Below is the original Calumet House, late 1870s, which eventually became the Calumet Hotel.
Here is a large image of the area southeast of town, about 1893. I've identified a few key locations. Notice how much of Calumet (later named Laurium) is seen here. Unfortunately the blurring is in the original photo.
The old C&H hospital, now gone.
Here is something most people have never seen; the original manual training, or high school. Located at the same location as the current high school, this burned in 1905. Below is an interior view of the study hall.
The original Washington school, burned in 1929. Below is a view of the back of the school, showing the #2 Calumet shaft. Taken after 1905 since the new high school is complete.
This is an old image, perhaps from the 1890s, showing students in front of the original Washington school.
Here is a look at the north part of Calumet as seen from the Calumet pond, or dam, location. Yes, there was a bridge across the dam at one time! It connected Waterworks Street to the north side of the pond. This photo is wide, so scroll to the right to see more.
