Other early mining companies
Another early Philadelphia-based concern, with holdings in the Keweenaw
The Hays was named for the discoverer of the famous Cliff Mine, John Hays of Cleveland. Along with the financial partners in Pittsburgh, he has been credited with the successful start of the famous Cliff. After he left the company (or was fired) in early 1845, other backers used his name for this adventure, hoping the famous name would attract investors. Unfortunately, nothing ever became of this company.
I have found no information on this company. This certificate was recently found at auction.
