Another early enterprise from 1845, the Northwestern's claim to fame is that it was one-half of the original formation of the Quincy Mining Company.
According to the book Old Reliable by Lankton and Hyde, "The Quincy was established because two existing ventures, the Portage Mining Company and the Northwestern Mining Company of Flint, held leases for the same lands.
Representatives of both companies met in Marshall, Michigan and organized the Quincy Mining Company on November 17, 1846."
