Menominee shakedown cruise
First trip for this fall winter season, Willy and I were looking for whitefish at the mouth of the Menominee River. The whitefish run the river and spawn upstream near the dam. We figured we could find them schooled up near the mouth of the river. Willy has a new Garmin Liveview depth finder and it should work great at finding schooled up fish if they are there.
When we got there the city had already pulled the docks so launching was a little tricky. The bay was a little choppy but we thought we could get out there. There was a chop from the North West and rollers from the south making for a rough ride. We gave up and decided to fish the river mouth. We did mark some fish there but it was still rough. Up the river we went looking for some schools. While we were motoring up the river and we're just south of the ship yard, the motor quit. There we sat in the middle of the river, right in the shipping channel. Then we notice the bridge open and a large barge heading our way with what looked like the bow section for one of the war ships on the barge. Our only option was to put the electric trolling motor in and using it to move over out of the way of the barge. That worked and we got out of the way of the barge and the three tugs moving it.
We fished our way back to the boat launch. We never got a bite. A real shakedown cruise but not an unexpected trip while "Fishing with Willy.
Broke down in middle of river.
Bridge is open, not good.
It is past us.
It is a big one.
