FISH REPORTS 2003

Saturday, October 25, 2003

The skies cleared and the sun was up. A beautiful frosty fall morning. The only problem was that the fish were not on the reef that day. We fished hard and ended up with 2 trout caught in 20 feet of water near the shore north of Traverse. It was a good ending to a good year of fishing. See you next spring.

Friday October 24, 2003

Mixed rain and snow comming down as we headed out. Rough seas and wind. Not the most ideal weather for fishing. We fished the 12 foot reef and had four on with four lines out on our first pass across the reef. All nice spawing size trout. Then they seemed to leave the reef. We fished the deeper water outside the reef and found them again. One of the trout was over 17 pounds. We ended up with our limit of 9 trout and 1 steelhead. It turned into a very good day of fishing.

Thursday October 23, 2003

Launced Steve Haddens boat and fished Traverse Bay looking for spawning trout. Trolled surface lines and downriggers set at 6 feet. Found that our favorite reef had assesment nets on it so we had to troll around the nets. We caught 4 trout and one 28 inch steelhead off the reef in 12 feet of water. Mostly males so the main grout pf spawners is not in yet.

Thurday, October 9, 2003

Winterized the boat and put it to bed. Nice to do it on a calm day with nice temperatures. Hope she rest well this winter so she will be ready to go next Memorial day.

Wednesday, October 8, 2003

Steve and his wife Sandy came up to the camp. We headed out at the crack of 10:00. Lac la Belle was dead calm and beautiful with all the reds and yellows of fall just glowing in the morning sun. The big lake had about a 1 1/2 foot chop once we rounded South Point. Fish were still there and bitting better than the day befor. We caught 11 trout by 12:30, the last two hit while we were pulling the lines and they had to go back. Nice to have a day when you can't keep the trout off the lures.

Tuesday, October 7, 2003

Fished with Joe from Bow Camp and Ed. Hit South Point again and fish were still there. We had many doubles with just two lines down. We ended up with our nine trout in a mornings fishing. The boys ate good up at bow camp as we donated the fish to them. Good thing they had fish as they never did get any venison. Weather is beautiful this week with the Keweenaw in full color.

Monday, October 6, 2003

Took the boat out for a run. Fished off of South Point in 150 feet of water. Landed four trout and kept 2 small ones for supper. Fish were suspended down about 120 feet. Lots of big red marks at 60 feet but they were not trout or salmon and did not go after the lures.

Sunday, September, 7, 2003

Joe and I fished with Bruce on the "Roamer". We got 6 fish, 4 trout and 2 salmon. Had to go out to South Point to find some trout after the fish stopped hitting in the bay.

Marge and I up early for a trip to Isle Royale. About 3 hours to Rock harbor. Hard to believe but the Park Service has no gas at Rock Harbor. Only one boat in the marina and the place looks like a ghost town. Looks like the park service got their way and have the whole island to themselves. Some day they will be kicked out and the island will return to the people.

We spent two days on the island with Robin, John, and Elyse who own the Kala Moiakka (my old boat) and then went to Thunder Bay. We spent two days in Thunder Bay with our friends Denis and Claudette, Daryle, Rosanne, Daniel and Alicia. From Thunder Bay we headed up the North Shore twords Nipigon. We spent one night in Loon Harbor and one night in Otter Cove. We caught two salmon and two trout at Otter Cove. Kept a fine trout for supper. Back from Canada in 3 to 4 foot seas on August 20. Was a fine trip. Here are some pictures, the dock at daybreak, sunrise on Keweenaw Point, dock at Isle Royale, bull moose, cow moose, Thunder Bay, Our friends boat, sleeping giant, Sibley Peninusla, Otter Island.

Then we tried in the shallows about 65 to 70 feet of water and caught 3 larger kings and lost 2. Looks like the larger kings are showing up in the bay. Coho were surfacing all over the place. Marge said that this was the longest "short" trip that she was ever on.

Thursday, July 10, 2003

Fished Stannard Rock with John Koicsek, Luke, Zack, Alex, Jerry and Red from Wisconsin. We had a 3 foot sea running from the South East all day so it was very rocky. We kept 10 fish and trew several back, the largest of which was about 15 pounds. Lots of fish showing up on the fish finder but they were not bitting very well. I wonder if all the fishing pressure is starting to show up. I think the fish are getting smarter and smarter just like the trout in Yellowstone. Time will tell. Pictures of the crew. another picture

First mate Marge and I went out to look for some trout farther out. Water temperature had warmed up to 50 degrees so we fished near some shoal water. Found the lake trout down 55 feet in 65 to 90 feet of water. We had our limit in a little while so we moved and tried some other spots. Had to throw some trout back as there were quite a few trout up near surface near some bug slicks. See picture of First Mate with fish and Captain and a 30 incher.

Friday, June 27, 2003

How does a charter captain take a vacation? He goes fishing. Steve and I got our Canadian fishing licenses and headed 52 miles out into the middle of Lake Superior for a day of Lake Trout fishing. We caught 54 lake trout in a 4 hour period. We had many doubles with our two lines in the water. Most fish were caught jigging and we caught fish from 245 feet to 32 feet. Fish were everywhere but they were not very big. They were a very dark trout with big heads and bodies. Will post some pictures of the trout after we get some developed. Here is on with Steve holding a more normal looking trout. It was one of the most memorable fishing trips that either one of us was ever on. Never had trout fishing that good. May have to do this again next year. Our scorecard.

Saturday June 21, 2003

Fished Stannard Rock with Jim Ritzenheim, his son Kris, and son in laws Steve and Gordie. We left early and seas were calm all the way out to the rock. We fished for some small trout in 60 foot by jigging. Fish were there but not bitting to good. There were bugs on the surface and some trout were surfacing around the boat. (Where were our fly rods when we needed them) After we had some nice eater trout in the cooler we moved to deeper water and some bigger trout. We filled our limit of 5 to 6 pound trout mostly by trolling. Took a cruise by the lighthouse and trolles surface lines. Picked up a fairly large trout that was caught and released. See attached picture of Jim and trout, Gordie and Steve, Jim and Steve, Ritz with fish, Steve with fish

June 1 through June 14, 2003

Been out jigging and trolling. Usual catch is three to four fish in a morning fish. Most fish are caught jigging in 180 to 200 feet. We did some trolling in the bay near the shore but the fish haven't moved in yet. Water temperature was 39 to 40 degrees but it is starting to warm up. No salmon showing up yet although we saw some fish surfacing on a bug slick. We tried trolling some shallow water and caught three in 120 to 114 feet and nine in 65 to 75 feet so some fish are coming in. The surface temperature was 45 degrees in the bay on June 13 so things are looking up. See attached picture of our nice catch from the 65 foot of water. Picture_2

Tuesday, May 27, 2003

Memorial day weekend. We fished off Smith Fisheries and South Point. We caught 31 trout in three days between all of the boats that were out. Best luck seemed to be jigging in 140 to 160 feet of water using jigs and sucker for cut bait.
