Uh - looks like cross stitch to me

It is cross stich and my congrats to the person who finished this. I have the same pattern - have had it for 10 years and am about to the top of the wheel house!

It is cross stitch. I've done this one myself. Another point of information, cross stitch isn't modern art. It is a very old craft.

Needlepoint is also cross stitch. It is the same stitches but made with yarn and canvas

I have done cross stitch and can appreciate the time that is involved in doing pieces like this. Living in Tennessee I haven't seem these patterns. Does anyone know if they are still available and where? Thanks

You win the prize for finding my first mistake of the New Year. Asking me to distinguish between cross stitch and needle point is like trying to sort out baking soda and baking powder in the kitchen. I know there must be a difference, but I'd have to brush my teeth with it to find out.

Well, at the risk of starting an arguement - needle point is different in that the stitch is a single diagonal across the canvas warp/weft and cross stitch is a double diagonal stich making an 'x' or 'cross'

I have the same cross stitch picture of Quincy Mine that my sister made for me about five or six years ago. Have it hanging up in the den area.

Does anyone know where these kits can be purchased that have local Copper Country landmarks? I'd like to buy some.

I think you can be excused for not knowing the difference. I have done both, and didn't remember the difference. I appreciate that you included it on Pastycam.

On the front of a piece of needlepoint, the continental, half cross and basketweave stitches look like slanting diagonal lines. Other stitches can use 1-4 strands of yarn and include variations of X and + and a smyrna cross stitch is to use these two stitches atop each other. Other stitches are oblong cross stitch, a trame cross stitch, long arm cross stitch, a rice stitch, a herringbone stitch, a wheat stitch, a triple leviathan stitch, a palestrina knot stitch, a fern stitch, a fishbone stitch, a van dyke stitch, a plaited gobelin stitch, etc. None of these stitches are a simple diagonal line but all are "crossed" stitches. Both the Calumet theater and the Quincy shaft could be done in needlepoint.

if a person goes to download.com and types "cross stitch" under a search engine, you can download demo progams, where you can scan your own picture and the program will print out the cross stitch pattern to be used. so you could easily turn any yooper picture into a unique cross stitch gift

so this is what mine would look like if it was done!!! Have to dig it out and get finished one of these days. Thanks Jack,id for the info, didn't realize that there were demos to download. Some pasty.com pics to cross stitch. Hmmmm. Sounds like great fun, but have too many projects started right now.

I finished Quincy about 10 years ago and gave it to a buddy as a graduation present. I'm still working on Calumet Theater for my husband.

The chart is by Deb Moffit (she used to live on Houghton Ave in Houghton). To find it... hmmm.... That could be tough, since both Calumet Theater and Quincy Mine Hoist are out of print, according to her distributor. She's also done some Keweenaw lighthouses.

I know that you used to be able to get the charts at Ben Franklin in Calumet, but that was a few years ago.

Hi all - Have we determined IF or WHERE these marvelous kits can be purchased? I have a beautiful wooden clock of the Quincy Mine Hoist made by a man from around Iron Mountain. I would really like to do the tapestry-like picture of it, too. Someone up there must know how to find where these kits can still be found. If I did do one I'd have something else to leave my family to remind them of their grandparents' roots. Yah? I loff da U.P. Glo - Mi.

To G.L.: I get my Copper Country scenery cross stitch kits in Copper Harbor from the Laughing Loon Gift Shop. I believe they have a link to their website from the main page of pasty.com. I am working on the Quincy Mine Shaft right now and also have done the Copper Harbor Lighthouse.

By the way, all you pro cross stitchers out there, I am fairly new to cross stitching, and am wondering if someone could give me some tips as to the correct way to do the stitches on the support beams and stanchions on the Quincy Mine kit. I am having trouble making the lines look straight, since the lines don't correspond to the "grid" in the fabric. Please email me if you could help. Thanks!

I'm looking for half cross stich kits, to make up my self. anything with children+dog in same canvas, ie: pears prints, or simular.

Anyone have a cross stitch chart for wheat or a loaf of bread (to put in the center of a grape border design for an altar cloth)? Thanks.
