I took a last minute trip to the Silver City Alps this evening and found the scene to be quite impressive. I had been looking at the ice mounds from across the street of the studio for about a week, and thought they looked big, but just passed it off as an illusion until I finally got down to the Lake today. They're huge! Big as the Porcupine Mountains! Well, at least through a big telephoto lens. Generally our mounds don't at all compare to the monsters that occur along the Keweenaw shore, but every few years our small shallow bay gets just the right wind and things go wild, as in this case.

One time I kayaked right inside one of them. I can still launch from the nearby Big Iron River, so stay tuned.

Happy Holidays

Dan, you never cease to amaze me!! Wonderful shot of my favorite Copper Country phenomenon-ice volcanoes:) For several years there was an interesting web site on these unique structures, by a couple of MTU students. Unfortunately, both have moved on and I believe the site is history. looking forward to seeing a kayaks-eye view of the inside...

Outstanding! Love the U.P. Pics!
The wind was pretty good today in Wisconsin
but we don't have formations like that.

I looked and thought WOW, Mr. Urbanski has put together another professional photograph that is amazing. I (we) are very lucky to have two very good nature photographers (Mr. Urbanski and Mr. Brimm) in our backyard to learn from. Thank you for another lesson well taught.

Dan, What a fantastic photo, looks more like a moonscape than an ice formation. Please keep these unique photo's coming.

Truly amazing...as many times as I have visited Silver City, I have never seen them...summer or winter...guess we are going to have to visit this time of year and catch a glimpse...

I love the texture of this photograph, feel like I could just reach inside and run my hands over the hills. Mr. Urbanski's got da touch.

Dan,
Wonderful shot. The latest I have ever been in your neck of the woods is the second week of deer season. I shows me what I have been missing. Thanks much for the 5 minute vacation. I generally need it once a day or so.

Merry Christmas to all in Yooper land!!!

ps If anyone would like them I think I may have a number of pictures referred to by marc, from the MTU site. They were/are quite spectacular.

That neat MTU website on "Ice Volcanoes of Lake Superior's South Shore" is still up and available here!

Way to go Frank! I was at work and didn't have time to look up the site to see if it still existed.
