The upper left driftwood with its icy beard bears a striking resemblance to our dog. And the lower right reminds me of the old Kraft Mystery Theatre production of "The Monkey's Claw". As I recall, that was the first color television program I ever saw, back in the early 60's.

Thanks for the closeups, Donn.

By ShawnR, GR MI on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 11:04 am:

Brrrrr! Great pictures, but dang, its cold!!!

By Candy, CA on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 11:07 am:

The bottom right photo looks like something Donn would have someone do in his Physical Therapy practice! Looks painful, but probably a good stretching exercise. Once again, Donn has outdone himself! And now he's able to share many of his works online himself at www.deyampert.com. Sure worth a first (and second and third...) look.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 12:11 pm:

Speaking of beards, who's the bearded seaman peeking out from behind the driftwood in the picture in the lower left corner? Not from the Edmund Fitzgerald, I hope! Chilling thought...

Speaking of things frozen, is the Portage Canal lift bridge at Houghton/Hancock pretty well "down" for the winter season?

By Fred from Indiana on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 03:47 pm:

Ahh the good old copper country.I remember every summer going up for vacation with the parents who were from Mohawk (Verna Mella&George Thibodeau)anybody know them??

By John P MI on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 04:19 pm:

Thanks Charlie, now I can get my fix again and such great pictures to do it with.

By Mary, Michigan on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 05:31 pm:

As a transplanted downstater, I love seeing any photos of the U.P. I'm originally from Menominee, went to college at Michigan Tech, and now live in Traverse City. I spend every spare vacation day in the U.P., and someday will be back there when I decide to sell my business. Any other former MTU students out there???

By Chris, MN on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 06:04 pm:

Mary, there are probably hundreds of us former MTU students who visit this dailey yet rarely (if ever) post.

Charlie, how many hits does pasty.com/cam take every day?

By Melodie, OH on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 06:46 pm:

Me too, I'm a '77 and '79 grad and check it out every day!

By Marti, GR, MI on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 07:45 pm:

Was just checking the snow thermometer to see how much white stuff is around. Can anyone tell me which of the 3 photos is the one showing the current amount of snow on the ground?

By mes on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 07:53 pm:

Marti,
I just read small text at top of page.
2002-2003 snowfall to date Dec. 2 = 58.2"

By John D.Dsm. IA on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 08:43 pm:

ABR cross country web site say's they have 17 on the ground. Saying they have real SWEET conditions.I'm jealous, down here in Iowa, longing to hit the x-c trails.

By R Somero CA on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 08:44 pm:

2 MTU grads here in San Jose, CA. '72 and '78.

By Lanna, MN on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 - 10:46 pm:

I'm not a grad of MTU, but my dad is. I'm a future student. This time next year, I'll be a resident of the UP! I can't wait. Beautiful pictures!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 12:10 am:

Chris,

Our logs report almost 5 million hits in November, and based on the first 3 days of this month, we are on track for 6 million+ in December. However, the concept of 'hits' can be a little misleading, as it represents every object requested by any browser (picture, webpage, order form, etc.), and not individual visits. It appears the typical visitor to Pasty.com generates at least 60 hits.

By Mary, WY on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 12:12 am:

What great natural sculptures.

By PJ, Lansing on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 09:52 am:

Anybody know what kind of camera Don is using to take these great photos?

By walt, ohio on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 09:59 am:

As I crunched the numbers in curiosity, 5MM hits/60per visit means over 83,000 visitors per month. WAHHH!! (Did I do my math correctly?) That's in the neighborhood of 3,000 per day.

By Candy, MTU '75, CA on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 10:08 am:

There are a lot of us displaced Yoopers out here in the rest of the world, looking back with fond memories. Lots of us Tech grads spread out here, too, remembering the walk through the wind tunnel on a cold December day!

By JimR G.R. Mich on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 10:59 am:

The lower right picture reminds me of the burried Giant Statue that is somewhere I've visited - Washington DC??? Hmmmm?? I'm sure one of the "R" gang will answer for me - either ShawnR or AimeeR..

By the way, all the "R" gang (theres 3 of us) are MTU alumini or in the process of...

Yeah for Menominee! How does that cheer go?? Oh yeah - M-E-N-O-M-I-N-E-E, Menominee, Menominee, Menominee!!! Yeah! Great way to remeber how to spell it. My sister lived there for a few years...I remember pizza from Brothers 3 in Marinette - yummmm...

By Diana - Wichita, Ks on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 11:14 am:

I love these photos. I live in Kansas and was lead to this site by my brother in Minn. I check it out daily and use some of the photos for my desktop. Thanks for sharing your part of the country with the rest of the world.

By ShawnR, GR MI on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 11:19 am:

Oh yeah, that does look like that statue. It is is called, The Awakening. Its in Washington DC, on an island in the Potomac river. Its really neat - like a giant coming right out of the ground. There are giant hands and a head, maybe a knee and a foot - the kids had a ball climbing on it. It was a great break from all the monuments and museums - I'd recommend a visit to it whether you have kids with you or not.

By Tina, Howell, MI on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 11:46 am:

I'm from Freda (a transplaned Yooper now) and just discovered your website today! What a shock to see a picture of one of "my cliffs"! Thank you for such lovely photos. I'm homesick now.....

By AimeeR, MTU on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 11:57 am:

Yeah that was really neat...

By anon. on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 02:02 pm:

The picture on the bottom right look like two naked people bending over. One over the other. Ha!!!!!

By AMP, MI on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 02:46 pm:

Two Tech Grads Here (91 & 93) - we visit daily to get the picture of the day (and to order pasties once in a while) - we miss pasty day at the MUB!

By de Yampert, Houghton, MI. on Thursday, December 5, 2002 - 12:13 am:

PJ from Lansing asked regarding the camera I used for the Freda pictures. That day I rattled off 260 photographs in 4 hours time with a Sony F717 digital camera using 138mb memory sticks.

By anon too! on Thursday, December 5, 2002 - 05:16 pm:

Hey anon, I saw the two people in the ice sculpture also! HA, too!

By PJ, Lansing on Friday, December 6, 2002 - 09:46 am:

Thanks for the info Don.

By Barbara, FL on Saturday, December 7, 2002 - 11:27 am:

What beautiful pictures! My husband graduated from MTU and took me to the UP for our honeymoon a couple of years ago. I am hooked! I love the beauty of the area. We are hoping to visit during the winter sometime (I haven't seen snow since I was 10).
