As names are posted for our month-end memorial, we will try to post them in this list as well:

Wilbert Maki
Eva Saarela
Frances Stimac
Bobby Wesa
Paul "Pat" Nutini

Our condolences to the families of Eva and Fran, both former residents of Still Waters, both took part in the traditional "pasty peeling" times we had at the Home (which is how this website got started). Just a few personal words about Wilbert Maki...

I first met Bert at a garage sale, where I could have listened for hours as he reminisced about the items being offered. Even a mundane piece, like a lamp, reminded him about something of historical significance to the Copper Country. Mr. Maki authored a number of books on local mining, and the rich heritage of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The legacy of people like Bert Maki have been an inspiration to us, to keep on looking at the beauty, history, and people of the U.P. for the daily pictures we bring. Thanks, Bert.

Also lost this month: Bradley Scott Hughes, of Monroe, MI.

A 17 yr old friend of my darling daughter, Brad died tragically in a car accident the same day I took to the roads to visit #2 son, a MTU student. I didn't learn of his passing until arriving in Hancock. Brad loved to hunt, drive fast, work on his car, and talk to the girls. His smile was infectious. A kid at heart, he loved the Monster's Inc. movie. There just isn't a way to describe the loss, other than to say, he will be so deeply missed. My only consolation is at least I was in the land of peace and beauty when I heard his tragic news. There is comfort in the woods, waterfalls, and lull of the lake. May the good Lord bless and keep all those in mourning this day and in the days to come.

Charles Taylor from Royal Oak but a yooper at heart. Buried in Bessemer, MI where the deer and other wild critters can visit him.. He enjoyed helping his brother in laws build their camp in he 40's and had many years of fantastic hunting with them. Was happy just being up here in God's country.

I'd also like to add two names - my brother-in-law Fred Salmi, who passed away Nov. 18th in Ironwood, but was from the Bergland area. I was able to make it up for the funeral, and even though it was a sad occasion for returning to the U.P., it was so nice to be back home for a little while. As I left Hancock on Wed., it was white-out conditions, which was a mite scary for this current Texan, but then sunshine and blue skies after Painesdale, and then storm and sunshine back and forth all the way across the U.P. Whew! The other name I'd like to add is my mother, Gladys Walman, who died five years ago last month. (I forgot to add her in Oct.) It seems I miss her more as the years go by, but I'm thankful for my U.P. roots and Finnish heritage.
