Deer season report    ...scroll down to share comments

By Sarah Hoffman, Iron Mountain, MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 07:38 am:

This is a very true story and this picture was taken by our babysitter Kristina Blockland, who was with me. On our way into Iron Mountain Sunday morning, driving down Carpenter Ave, we may have found the most dedicated YOOPER deer hunter ever! We had to run to our local Shopko & buy a disposable camera to take these because I didn't think anyone would possibly believe what we saw.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 07:46 am:

Our thanks to Kristina and Sarah for their quick thinking, and thanks to Paul and Dotty Kinnun for forwarding Sarah's note. Certainly an unusual glimpse of life in the U.P. :oP

By Brian on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 07:49 am:

Too bad you didn't have a video camera. We would have seen this episode on TV for sure! The funny video shows would have added the caption: "Man hits deer with his bike" or something similar.

By finkin - MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 07:51 am:

ROTFLMAO! That's a true Yooper!

By ashley, mi on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 08:07 am:

wow!! that deer must have been on the average 150 lbs hey? i bet his back hurt after that.

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 08:52 am:

That one's going on my background. Would make a great postcard.

By JimR G.R. MI Work to Eat, Eat to Live, Live to Bike, Bike to Work on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 09:23 am:

Bikes rule! What a great photo!

Hunt to Eat,
Eat to Live
Live to Bike,
Bike to Hunt...

By Molly Houghton MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 09:33 am:

This person looks too young to be carrying something of this size on his shoulders, but he's got that 'ol Schwinn bike he's riding and that thing isn't caving in any time soon. This is sure the funniest picture I have seen in a long time and only in the Yoop could you see something like this. Thanks to the performer, we are all chuckling this morning. Now for "finkin-MI", what does ROTFLMAO mean? Never saw that before.

By Debbie Michigan on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 09:47 am:

I love it! Only in the U.P.!!!

By Joy Fl on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 10:32 am:

Only In the U.P. would u see a sight like this Love it. Can picture my brothers trying something like this

By bill,minnesota on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 10:34 am:

this guy is in training for the annual Heights Boot Hockey tournament held every February on Saratoga Avenue. you should see him during bear season

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 10:44 am:

It looks impossible! Are we SURE that isn't a deer scarf around his neck? ROFL. How can he POSSIBLY carry something so heavy... How'd he get on his bike? This has to get a photo of the year from SOMEONE!

Check the papers! It should be on the front page!

By Beena, MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 11:30 am:

I just have one question...
Where is the gun? :)

By yoopertransplant on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 11:49 am:

In regards to finkin - it means rolling on the floor, laughing my butt off

By DMac on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 12:23 pm:

I LOVE this...I just LOVE this...hahahahaha...

By finkin - MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 12:28 pm:

This is so good I keep coming back....this guy is the SISU poster boy LOL!

By Roxanne, Or on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 12:31 pm:

oh there's no place like home...creative and resourceful people us yoopers!

By AJ on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 01:06 pm:

This person collects slightly fresh ROAD KILL!

By Mike, MN on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 01:12 pm:

I have heard about that Heights Hockey Tournament. I had some buddies travel from Chicago just to go to it. They saw it on this web site. It is during the Pine Mountain Ski Jump Weekend. They said it was the best hockey they have seen played on the street. They told me hundreds show up for this each year.

By Jon, MN on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 01:26 pm:

I can't believe my eyes! The photo is truly humorous to all. However, I have to play against that guy in the Annual Height's Hockey Tournament this year. He told me last year that he had planned to train hard for this year's tournament after suffering a loss to one of the more underskilled teams in last year's tournament. I had no idea he would take it this far. How am I supposed to top that training regiment?

It just goes to show that you just can't beat a Yooper if they set their mind to the task at hand!

By Vaughn Spence,Mich on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 01:28 pm:

Thanks ,for letting me share a moment in the life of a Yooper.
V.L.Spence
Redford Mich.

By Lowell MO on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 02:19 pm:

I've seen deer carried in a lot of different ways in the U.P. but I think this has to be a first time for this. Inovative thinking.
One for the Books. Only on Pasty.Net do we get to see such interesting Pictures.

By Jay Johnson on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 03:30 pm:

I think that guy's name is Eric Wicklund

By Sue on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 03:31 pm:

Anybody there? How come there are no responses? Are you all passed out on the floor from laughing at the person carrying this deer?

By trollivia, illinois on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 03:47 pm:

oh dear. he's not peddling that thing on the street, is he?

By Al, Ca. on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 04:09 pm:

"Lost" his license so usin' da trux OUT....

By yooperspud, id on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 04:26 pm:

i guess nothing rides like a "deer", does it, eh?

By Chuck H., MI. on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 04:35 pm:

Look at that picture, he didn't even gut the thing. I'm voting for road kill.

By MM LL MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 04:35 pm:

It don't run like a deer no more, eh?

By Canton Bulldog on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 06:28 pm:

There is no way that is roadkill! That is silly talk! I come up from Ohio for the Heights Charity Boot hockey tournament every year and I am pretty sure there aren't many cars. Seems most up in that area have a DUI or four and riding lawn tractors are the way to get to the bar and beat the fuzz. Unless one of them Yoopers modified his Cub Cadet, the deer have the right of way and the roads are safe in IM-K.

By Tom Gordon, Tennessee on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 07:25 pm:

Ah, a scene from my home town. It makes me homesick. I am not saying that you can’t see similar scenes like this in Tennessee, but I reckon that you would probably have to travel east, towards the mountains

By Sandy, UP on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 07:54 pm:

Are we certain that he's not just taking his pet out for a bike ride? I've seen folks doing stranger things.

By ILMHitCC on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 08:00 pm:

Sisu poster boy gets my vote. But, I have to admit it's frighteningly close to the "you might be a redneck..." jokes I've been getting lately. Somebody buy this guy a beer!

By Pete, Il. on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 08:09 pm:

Good picture. Looks like his left foot is on the pavement?

By Jeff Laitila, Japan on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 08:25 pm:

This is an instant classic. I love it!

ROTFLMAO stands for "Rolling On The Floor Laughing My --- Off"

By Sandy, Lower MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 09:01 pm:

Too cool!!!! That gent is the ULTIMATE sportsman!

By R.J.S from Ripley on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 09:47 pm:

I was born and raised in the Copper Country (left the area in 1977 at the age of 42) and this is a picture that is even hard for me to believe. Is it possible that this is an illegal deer kill ?

By Counsel for the defense on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 10:01 pm:

Objection: The question assumes that the deer is dead.

By Catherine--Holland, MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 10:04 pm:

Would you want to carry a gutted deer over your shoulders?

Lots of roadkill down here--kind of sobering to see very l-o-n-g and large bloodatains on the highway!

By Sarah Hoffman , MI. on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 10:45 pm:

To all Curious:

I am Sarah Hoffman -the one who took the picture. It was not road kill from what I could see, it was legally tagged, it was gutted but appeared to have been done possibly the night before due to the rope marks around its neck. He was traveling with it on his bike down the middle of the outside lane on Carpenter Ave. in Iron Mountain-Kingsford! Now is it dedication or stupidity? We don't know! Nor did I plan to ask him, his name is not Eric Wicklund either & he is also approximately 40yrs. old! Glad that everyone is enjoying the picture.

By finkin - MI on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 11:52 pm:

Had to come back one more time...need to save this for when my son asks to *borrow* gas money to go back to deer camp this weekend!!

By Red Alsman on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 12:59 am:

This is not hard to believe. I use to hunt deer in Iron Mountain and Watersmeet. I remember one guy shooting a buck and put in the back seat of the vehicle so he could gut it back at the cabin. The deer wasn't dead and you should have seen the inside of that car when the deer woke up.

By The librarian in Grand Rapids, MI on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 09:29 am:

Only in the UP!

By Angie M. Owosso, MI / formally Munising, MI on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 09:31 am:

O'K for all my big shot city friends who tease me about being a former Yooper - just goes to prove a point that we can and do think "Outside the box". Good picture, funny as the day is long. Thanks!

By a Yankee in Atlanta, GA on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:15 am:

Geez, and the hunters down here were whining about their trucks not being ready for the season...what whimps!!! I love it...

By Brian Andersen,Michigan on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:43 am:

I think Steve Alimenti has a strong back to ride his nephew's bike across town with a little ole deer on his shoulders, good hunting Steve.Did Sue help put that deer on your shoulders?

By SHelly Reaume - MI on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:59 am:

I wonder if his wife shot the deer, or if little Stevie did it himself.

By Jack / Munising on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 11:37 am:

Ah, you all missed the boat, eh! After the Firestone tire problems earlier, Goodyear wanted to do something to really grab everyone's attention. This is really a commercial for Goodyear tires. Notice the tire sidewall is not bulging at all. As a matter of fact, there are no blowouts or deaths reported either. Just a near fall for the carrier...Boy, that deer is huge for his size.
Munising,MI

By Dick Masters, Munising, MI on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 12:08 pm:

Love it, great addition to Yooper Lore.

By N of the North on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 12:25 pm:

Too bad he doesn't have a Christmas Tree mounted with the deer -- that's what I miss, going back downstate after Thanksgiving, the road full of Trolls with their bagged deer and tree, happily heading home.

By Karen Biehl, Springfield, VA on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 01:02 pm:

Makes me homesick. This is a great time of the year to be in the U.P.

By Wyoming, CK on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 01:03 pm:

Never seen the likes, I've heard about those yoopers, now I've seen it all!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Missy Kelly-Clark; Bridgeport, MI on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 01:34 pm:

Someone up there had mentioned that the guy didn't even gut the deer! ...I should hope not, because then he would end up wearing the deer like a hat and that wouldn't be good since he needs to see where he is driving : ) Congrats on your successful hunt/catch (whichever applies) lol

By spjb , mi on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 02:24 pm:

only in the up of wally world is his job!!

By Gookus, Montana on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 02:52 pm:

It's easy to see that the deer is craning her head out to the right to balance out the load, afterall the next 2 miles home is her turn to pedal.

By George Ridinger , Alzada, MT on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 03:37 pm:

I would never have believed this happening somewhere's other than in Alzada, MT

By Sarah Hoffman, MI. on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 03:53 pm:

TO ALL STILL TRYING TO FIGURE THIS OUT:

This is Sarah Hoffman once again and the guy in the picture is not a guy named Steve! He does work at Wally World. He is not a young kid! Have fun:-)

By R Bailey, Ontonagon on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 04:10 pm:

Is the deer named Steve?

By Escanaba in da moonlite...yaa..I know... on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 04:31 pm:

I tink dat dis is my brodder. Hard to tell wit duh the hood an all.... but he put out a bunch of old fermented apples eh, da deer ate dem all and is workin on a nice buzz goin dare. I believe he tought dat duh doe jus needed a lift eh...or he coulda hit her wit his bike and felt obligated to take her home and do right by her. I can't wait to taste dem dare backstraps eh!!

By kelly/munising,mi. on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 04:38 pm:

I vote for this guys method of transporting his kill. Beats the heck outta driving it across the big bridge and getting it all full of road slush! And....ahem....the last I checked the local paper.....a majority of the dui's were from "outta towners"!

By Joan, Key West FL on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 04:39 pm:

Sitting here in Key West, this picture brings back all the fond and funny memories of my years in the U.P. Thanks for sharing! Wish I was back in the UP - snow and all!

By David, Vulcan on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 05:19 pm:

The guy's name is David. He's the first cousin of a friend of mine at work. I can't believe how fast this has gotten around! Only in da U.P. eh? LMAO
He is also known as Bionic Dave.

By Big Bob, Michigan on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 05:47 pm:

Stella? Is that you? Those glasses don't fool me a bit. Quit showing off and call me some time.

I really miss those bike rides...

By Andy, Yooper4LifeHaHa on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 06:16 pm:

I cant believe it! I cant believe it!
Well, actually I can! Do you think he hoisted that up there himself? Boy, thats what you call the true great white hunter, see you Leno someday!

By juzz, tasmania, australia on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 06:46 pm:

I would like to thank moonlit in escanaba's brother for being the chivalrous man, and giving that poor, bike stricken doe a ride to the nearest emergency rooms. Of course, sometimes they don't come out of it, especially when their throats are CUT! ...hahaha...hey, can I have a package of them there backstraps? (and a few morels to go along with them) I miss Michigan! :)

By sk, michigan on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 08:58 pm:

Thanks Sarah for making my week. If the pic. doesn't make you laugh, the e-mails sure do. We Yoopers are a hearty and resourceful lot and proud of it.

By Pat on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 09:50 pm:

Nice Picture but it sure isn't Steve Alimenti, who is a step son of mine. I do know the man as I work at Walmart also.

By Jim, Michigan on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:05 pm:

is that a banana bike with money handle bars??

By Christina, Michigan on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:23 pm:

I think this is the funniest picture I have ever seen with a deer. I didn't think U.P. people were like that. I've only been once, so I guess I didn't get a chance to see what they were like. *smiles*

By Wes Anderson lansing Mi. on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:53 pm:

This is one funny picture!

By Andi Bark River, Mi on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 11:38 pm:

Any which way you can get 'er home.

By Stew, michigan on Friday, November 22, 2002 - 08:39 am:

Wow, what a picture! After looking at it for a minute I noticed that there is a rope mark on the deers neck! I wonder if the person just ripped it off from someones backyard! Anyone also who uses a bike in weather requiring cold weather apparel most likely has lost their license as well. Any deer missing up there?

By Alex Tiensivu, ROFL in Georgia on Friday, November 22, 2002 - 09:56 am:

This WHOLE PAGE... Comments and photo should be on the 2004 calendar! This is so funny, I have tears in my eyes from reading all the comments! I actually AM ROFL!

I have never seen so many comments over a photo... but then again, who's ever seen a photo like this?!?!

Alex

By Sandy, Michigan on Friday, November 22, 2002 - 10:42 am:

Can't be true!!! is what I said to myself, looking at this photo!!! Could this be a Yooper joke? Would make a good front page tho and also on the top of list for TV news!!! Only in the U.P.

By JCF - Michigan on Monday, November 25, 2002 - 11:00 am:

All you guys with the smart comments are just jealous because you couldn't carry a deer on your shoulder let alone ride a bike at the same time.

By Dan - fmr Yooper in WA on Monday, November 25, 2002 - 11:25 am:

Well, I got the deer I left to hang at Jimmy's the weekend before, then stopped by jr.s friend's Matti's house to pick up his bike where he'd left it after the blizzard last Tuesday. (Matti lives in the old Knutesen place on the hill above the lake, remember that? Anyway, the emergency brake on the truck isn't much good no more and 2nd gear syncro is gone so about the time I got the bike off the back porch I hears this bang and look to see the truck bouncin over a log on the lake shore and the deer about 4 feet in the air above the bed..

I'll go back for the truck after the spring thaw..

By Lynn, MI on Monday, November 25, 2002 - 11:39 am:

this is something that would only happen up

He's lucky some other U P hunter didn't take a shoot at the "moving deer".

By DC, former Yoopr, WI on Monday, November 25, 2002 - 12:06 pm:

Yooz guys are too much, eh? It isn't as bad as it looks, 'cuz a 150-pounder dresses out to less den a hunnert pounds, ya know. And a dead dear rides pretty nice on da shoulders, unless it gets froze. Den its a b___ ta haul like dat. Blood washes outa da coat--no problem. At least he's not one of them appleknockers on a 4-wheeler, hey?
