This is from an old negative from my Grandfather, Fredrick J. Haun, which he made in 1915-16. The fellow in the picture is Louie Gipp, George's youngest paternal uncle. He is walking on what is now US 41 through Delaware and is probably on his way back to the "Clubhouse" after fishing the Montreal. While George may be the most famous Gipp, the whole family was comprised of some unique and outstanding individuals. The first Gipp in the Copper Country was Louie's father Anton. Anton joined the 27th Michigan at age 46! He served with the 27th through all its campaigns which included Vicksburg, the siege of Knoxville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, the Crater, and Petersburg. He was wounded at Spotsylvania but went on and mustered out in 1865. He return to Calumet and was a stone mason for C&H. His sons were also a hardy lot and were renowned sportsmen and often won the various shooting contest held during those days.

Louie Gipp was very likable fellow. He was close in age to his sister Mary's son Anton Haun who was my Great-Grandfather. He had left the Copper Country for a few years after a quarrel with Miss Silbilsky and worked in the western mines. Louie returned, after the fellow she had married was killed in the mines - and he married her. They never had children of their own but did take several in and raised them in those days before social services. Either Deana Silbilsky had bad luck or was bad luck because Louie was killed in the old Tamarack section of C&H's Calumet Conglomerate in 1927. My mother was a young girl of 8 when the Haun's made the trip to Calumet for the funeral. They still waked people in their homes then and she had a vivid memory of Louie's hunting dogs, who were out of sight in the shed behind the house, howling as soon as the men picked up the casket to leave the house.

This website is a constant source of entertainment, information, and history. I appreciate what must be a lot of hard work and energy which goes into each day, and the contributions of people like Mr. Meier who make it come alive.

Thanks for the great old shot and local history, Paul! At first glance I saw Teddy Roosevelt. Walking softly. Carrying a fisherman's stick.

What RD in Iowa said! The history really comes alive in a story such as Paul's. Thanks so much for sharing.

It's too bad that "Win one for the Gipper"
Ronald Reagan isn't well enough to enjoy
today's Pasty Cam.

I wish I could describe the POWER this Website has on me. There are no words for it. It's the FIRST thing I go to daily. It's like I'm putting in a URL for a different world somewhere! (Well, I guess in a way, I am!)

Its not every Website where you can get History, Weather reports, Bridge reports, Huntings reports, etc. Also get loads and loads of beautiful pictures.

Thanks for all of it and congratulations on a job well done.

Thank you for showing that picture of Louie Gipp. That is my Uncle Jake Gipp's uncle. Uncle Jake used to tell many stories of the family. My uncle Jacob would be way over 100 years now. He lived his married life in Laurium to Margaret Gillies Gipp, my Mother's sister.

Enjoy reading Pasty.Cam and seeing the pictures of the land that I love.
