This must be some sort of a record!!The snow is pretty. I wish we'd get some.

In my visits to Ft Wilkins over the years I do not recall seeing any reference to barns or stables for the livestock, horses, cows, etc.. Are they there and I missed them? Keep those fine pictures coming. We all enjoy logging on each day, viewing the beautiful pictures and reading the comments. Looking forward to the snow scenes.

No stables as such are preserved or really mentioned at the fort. There wouldn't have been any significant number of horses, if any, since it was an infantry post and only the officers might have had mounts. The north woods wasn't a very horse friendly environment - there just might not have been more than one or two. Cattle and livestock were handled by the sutlers, private citizens who supplied the post with food and goods. These folks would have been located outside the stockade or in Copper Harbor.

And Paul in Illinois, The stables and stockyard at the fort were along the row past the married enlisted mens quarters that you see pictured above. They are no longer standing. There is an interpretational plaque that mentions them posted on the site where they used to stand between the married enlisted quarters and the graveyard. There are possible plans for future reconstruction of more building sites at the fort. There was a sutlers post inside the actual garrison walls during the 1844 occupation of the fort. There was not a sutler during the 1868 occupation of the fort. At that time the sutler's building was used by the officers as a type of clubhouse.
