Among dozens of shots in the Pasty Cam photo in-box recently, here's a couple of contrasting glimpses of life in the U.P... Doug Smith takes us into the old deer camp, where we need to turn up the heat and plumbing (pretty luxurious accommodations here in the Keweenaw woods). Meanwhile, outside the snow keeps falling, which should leave some ideal tracking conditions when the season opens tomorrow morning. Actually, Dave Walli's snow berry shot was taken at the long swamp down Cliff Drive.

Thanks again to aspiring Pasty Camists everywhere who are sending such a variety of scenes spotlighting Upper Michigan. Happy (and safe) hunting.

We rented "Escanaba in Da Moonlight" last week. (yes, actually found it in the local drug store in Cleveland). Found it rather amusing. Don't get to see enough Yooper movies. I've been recommending it to my local deer hunter friends.

Before I head up up to the Peninsula, just had to check out the Copper Harbor cam. Looks like we did get some more powder overnight:

This morning
And over on the Bridge Cam I see Eino already beat me - - I just know that's him in the white Dodge pickup on the Hancock side.
Wait for me Eino

I guess this is the sign that we're getting out just in time...sigh! May can't come soon enough!

By Becky,Lansing/Tamarack City on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 09:59 am:

It looks soooo good. Can't wait to get back. Just one more week to cross that bridge. Even the snow looks good as it's still 50ish in Lansing

By Bob FL on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 10:01 am:

George from Orange Park, are you a yooper? Iam!! We have at least 8 yoopers here in Middleburg. This hunting camp brings back good memories. I don't miss the snow.

By Klp-Southeast GA on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 12:38 pm:

To Bob In Middleburg Fl, I'm also a Yooper not to far from you here in Brunswick,Ga. Where are you from in the UP? Like you, tomorrow's Michigan holiday brings back memories, but don't miss the white stuff.

By Melissa, Grand Ledge, MI on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 12:45 pm:

Yes, it is warm today in the Lansing area. I didn't even need a coat to let the dog out this morning! Maybe we'll get lucky and see that inch of snow that's being predicted!

To T & R in California:
my reply message was kicked back because of my company's "commercial" domain name.
I shop online at www.bn.com often, and it appears they have the movie available.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

By Mike-Transplanted Yooper, Redford, MI on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 01:26 pm:

It's the second week of deer camp and all 'da guys are here...... (and so on)

By Mike R. New Berlin WI on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 01:37 pm:

On Paul Harvey today he was talking about the Crystallized Copper the folks in the Keweenaw are finding and getting big bucks for the stuff. He called them folks Rock Hounds. What's with that?

By Lowell MO on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 01:50 pm:

Have found a site on the net called webshots where they have pics for screen saver and desktops. They are nice but can't compare with the ones that you have here on pasty.net

By Lee, Mi on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 03:30 pm:

Mike R. read about the story in the Gazette archives, titled "Treasure Trove"

KLP in Brunswick Ga. I worked at Whitepine, but did my huntin in the Bondfalls area.

By Jeff Carlson, Illinois on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 09:41 pm:

It's the second week of deer camp and all our friends are here....great pictures. My wife's uncle had a rougher place then that on the Brule River by Iron River. I helped him dress a deer once, afterwards we put our feet by the fireplace and watched the snow fall. There was a picture of Uncle Willard's first shot of the deer season so the caption said. Actually he was pouring himself a shot.
Hey tell Sharon to clean up the cabin....

By Candy, CA on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 09:56 pm:

You can download photos from webshots that are from the Keweenaw. Just go to the site and put Keweenaw in the search, and you'll find some nice pics (not as good as pasty.com, of course, but they're something...)

By Dave, Dearborn, MI. on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 03:54 am:

I like the snow berry's as a WOW. Thanks.

By Peggy Riemer on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 07:06 am:

No doubt you're being flooded with bambi photos. Here's another. We startled this one outside our house. "There he was: gone."

I think the snow berry picture would make a great christmas card. How about it, Charlie? Not just calendars but holiday cards and note cards featuring the great pasty cam shots. Something to think about..............

Bob in Middleburg, FL- I was born in Vermont. I work with Norm Maki who lives in Jax, a true yooper from Mass City, who brought the Pasty site to my attention about 2 years ago. GREAT PHOTOS!

By Norm Jax FL on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 10:51 am:

Bob, middleburg yooper, we should all get together for a Pasty party.

By Becky/Lansing, Tamarack City on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 01:59 pm:

This bridge is my all time favorite. I always come back to it for wallpaper. Thanks for the bonus shot of it. I go crazy at the base of the bay on the way up and really loose it crossing this bridge-I'm so happy to be there.

By Lowell MO on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 03:04 pm:

Candy: Went to webshots and did the Keweenaw search and low and behold if one of the pictures doesn't have the Pasty.com emblem on it. Some of the other pics also looked familiar. Small world!!

By An on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 03:44 pm:

To the Jax and Middleburg Yoopers from a Yooper that has been living in Live Oak for about 28 years now. I would love to attend a Pasty party. I just made about 20 from my Grams old recipe. They were delicious, not quite as good as hers, but pretty darn good. About twice a year I make a bunch and the kids love them. I have to hide a few in the back of the freezer if I want to have more than a few for myself. My family farm was in Bootjack, just outside of Lake Linden. Truly "God's Country"

By BT, TC on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 04:30 pm:

Hey An , where was your farm. My family's farm was in bootjack too. Aittama's...no em by chance.

My cuz lives in Live Oak, too!

By Joy fla. on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 04:44 pm:

Pasty Party sound great

By finkin - MI on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 05:59 pm:

I love Opening Day...NO rush hour today, and hardly any big huge pick ups on the city roads...except for the pretty girlie kind. Could you keep them at DC little longer :)

By Roxanne, OR on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 06:26 pm:

Scrolled down to see if it mentioned just what deer camp......handwriting looks just like my dad's...anyone hear of CAMP NUTTIN?

By George Vondette, Orange Park, FL on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 08:35 pm:

Florida Yoopers, e-mail me or "Norm Jax FL" above and maybe we can have a Pasty Party. Norm is the expert. I tasted my first Pasty last month while visiting St. Ignace. Norm said I had to eat one while in the UP or it didn't count. Lin and I loved them!!!

By VM.Calumet on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 09:13 pm:

To BT, I know the Aittama farm. My mom and dad lived right across the road in the brick ranch home that Tom Moyle built. My dear dad passed away a little more than a year ago. My mom moved into town just a few weeks ago. Now the house is up for sale. Anyways, we've been in the Aittima house and know the people who own it very well. I love that farm. They fixed it up very nice. It is beautiful all around that area. (ANY DEER HUNTERS IN THAT AREA HUNTING AND THINKING ABOUT MOVING TO THIS AREA PERMANENTLY, THERE IS A BEAUTIFULL RANCH HOME FOR SALE ON THE DEARFEILD ROAD. IT USED TO BE THE MUD LAKE ROAD. THE NAME CHANGED.CONTACT ME IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED. PRICE JUST CAME DOWN.) I love that area in Bootjack. My husband is out there deer hunting this weekend.

By SuzieQ, Illinois by birth, Yooper by choice on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 09:31 pm:

"drain is winterized, do not use"....is the sign over the kitchen sink. Which could only mean the hunters in this stabb'n cabin are go'n in the five gallon bucket on the front stoup! Great pics today.

By nita , Northern California on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 05:10 pm:

No, Suzie Q. They just go off the porch or on the nearest bush. Take it from a mother of 4 sons plus 1 husband. Most men never completely get housebroken if the circumstances are right.

Lone female surrounded by the male species

By Mary on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 05:48 pm:

LOL at Nita!! I too am a "lone female" in my family. Three brothers and now two sons and of course one husband. Even the dog is male!!
When doing the bathroom cleaning, I always lament over the fact that I'm the only one sitting down, so I know it's not me "sprinkling when I'm tinkling", so why is it I'm the only one cleaning it up? Should have taught those boys how to hold a toilet brush, instead of a baseball bat!!!!!

By Bob in Green Bay on Tuesday, November 26, 2002 - 08:04 pm:

To Roxanne in Or.
Just got back from Camp Nuttin near Nissula. My buddy Joe.S. and I started the camp in 1968, still have 13 of the 15 original members. Joe and his Uncle died of cancer. Great group of guys, scattered all over the country, but most make it to the camp every year. We are closer than family. Stop in for a beer!

By Bob in Green Bay on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 - 12:50 pm:

To Roxanne in Or.

Regarding "Camp Nuttin". Just got back yesterday with my buck. Good hunting, good friends, and lots of snow. Nothing has changed since we started it in 1968, except we lost two members to cancer. Still have 13 of us left. Stop in for a cold beer someday.
