"The war to end all wars"... Nearing the end of World War I, anxious wives and sweethearts, keeping the home fires burning, could only hope their cards and letters would make it through. Some joined the men behind the lines to give their support. Looks like these Salvation Army ladies have a meal of pasties and apple pie waiting for the soldiers.

We need to honor all of our veterans. A young man who was good friends with my daughter and foster daughter joined the marines after high school. He helped my foster daughter get back on the right road. He is one of the reasons that she is doing so good. The other day he showed up at my door in his uniform. He had just got home from boot camp and was so proud of himself. He had turned from a boy into a young man. His is one of the units that is on call for Iraq. My prayers are with him. I spent 6 quiet years in the navy in the 70's. We are now sending our young people into harms way to protect our freedoms. This is a very special Veterans Day. We all must say prayers. I would also like to say hello to Guy Snyder and his friend from World War 2.

Also remember it was 27 years ago this evening, around 7:30 pm, the Edmund Fitzgerald went down with a crew of 29 sailors. Even during the 'quiet years' we're not immune from danger.

If it was not for our vetrans where whould we be today?. Theses are the brave souls who fought and died for all of us through all the wars and all the years, They laid thier lives on the line and fought bravinly for our way of life, freedom and democracy. To each and every veteran out there I salute you, this is your day and to all the brave young men and women of our armed forces I salute you as well and pray to god to keep you all out of harms way. So when it comes to veterans think about what they did for our country and then think about what you yourself have done for our country and when you figure out the answer to that one then you shall know why there is a day to honor our veterans.!!!!!

Seems as if holidays never come on their own day anymore---but this one just happened to make it.So let's all remember 11-11-11am as we did in grammar school many years ago with a minute of silent reflection in honor of veterans at 11am.

I remember the Fitz. Saw her many times in the St. Marys River and the Detroit River. She went down SO fast, those people never had a chance. The big lake and those winds are really powerful.

I was on the Roger Blough the night the Fitz sank.
We were about six hours behind her. In all my years of sailing I never experienced seas so enormous and frightening. The Blough is a massive ship but there was green water coming over the boat deck. When we joined the search in the early morning hours 17 miles from Whitefish in those seas, it was really a horrible feeling inside to see blankets and mattresses and other debris drifting by the ship. God rest their souls.

I was in the Soo area to see my brother at LAKE SUPERIOR STATE COLLEGE, We all went down the locks to see the boats go through. One of which was the EDMUND FRITZGERALD. We yelled to the crew as it went by. This was one month before it sank. Its last trip through the locks as it was heading west towards Superior Wisconson. I remember hearing from the radio about the sinking the day after it sank while riding in my parents car next to Lake Superior near Silver city Mi. When I got home I looked at the pictures we took from the Soo and saw the FRITZ.

Had read about the Edmond Fitzgerald at the "Great Lakes Museum web site but the one shown above is the most extensive that I have seen about it.
Was a child in WWII but can remember alot about and had members of my immediate family that served in the Army in Europe. So have a lot of repect for all of our veterans and think that even more should be done to honer them.

The ship picture we used Monday was actually ready to upload shortly after I got up around 4:30 this morning. I got sidetracked on tasks involving pasty shipments and the Pasty Cam 2003 calendar, and flat out forgot to put on today's picture! Your note reminded me, but in my haste, I wrote that the Edmund Fitzgerald sank 22 years ago, until somebody on the 11/11 discussion pointed out the error. I should have read Toivo's note above... Better yet, I should just ask Toivo to take over posting the daily pictures until we get past the holidays. It gets sooo busy here at Pasty Central this time of the year.

Thank you for all your efforts with regards to this web sight. You spoil us by your dedication and so when you do not post at "normal" times your loyal fans worry. Was in the Navy stationed in Bremerton, Washington, just days before the Fitz went down. Was notified by the Red Cross of my fathers death.
Came home for his funeral, went to Misery Bay after the funeral, huge waves, the day of my dad's funeral was the day the Fitzgerald sank. Born and raised in Painesdale, Dollar Bay. Still get up there at least once a year. What a wonderful piece of "God's Country".

I would like to get to know more about the Edmund Fritzgerald, I am a nephew of Russell Haskell (3rd engr). My father married late and he has passed on several ago now and I really have no other connections, people who were alive when the Edmund went down. I am interested in talking to people who have seen the "mighty" ship or who has possibly even taken a tour with her. I remember the Edmund Fritzgerald,I lived in Cleveland Ohio.I would go to Lake Erie to watch the ships pass by dreaming of the sea, but knowing it was only a lake, when I was a young girl.When I turned 19 years old I went to work for Cedar Point an amusement park in Sandusky Ohio.It was my first time away from home,after working, I would go to the beach to watch the sunset and to watch the ships pass by,One ship that I did take notice,on how large it was,The Edmund Fritzgerald.I never had seen such a large ship it seemed so long, seemed to move so slow,Yet knowing it was going pretty fast.I sat there wondering what would they be hauling? How many people did it take to sail her? Envying them on the cities they would see,wishing I could be on that ship seeing different ports of call,adventures gallore.Dreaming.Later in my life I did marry a sailor,How ironic it was.
He showed me ships that I never dreamed on how large they can be.From tug boats to Tenders ,Frigates to the mighty carriers at Norfolk Va. I will never forget the day when they announced the downing of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It was a sad day for all who knew her,and her crew.And she touched so many people that a song was written about her.She captured our hearts, our imaginations,our breath.I am sure like others who knew her,she will be missed.
