Month end memorial to:

Paul Clemons
Dave Coltman
Bette Kaiser
Bertha Maki
Gertrude Strom
Cecilia Rost

I had the priviledge of meeting Bette Kaiser a few years ago during her numerous visits to Still Waters, brightening the day of residents with cheerful conversation. Another friend who passed on this month, and who loved to chat, was Dave Coltman. I'll always remember Dave's strong voice when he was in his prime, leading singing at First Baptist.

As always, you are welcome to add a memory or two in honor of a friend now gone.

By Sally Nelson, Littleton, CO on Thursday, October 31, 2002 - 11:10 am:

My deepest sympathies to Mark, Ross, Beth and Lynn for the loss of their dad, Dave Coltman. I had him as a choir director, English & Speech teacher, Sunday School teacher...you name it. He was a dear, close friend of my late brother. How many times we'd go to their house to practice for music specials...such memories. The girls were great babysitters for me when my daughter was little. I understand your grief but also know that he is "Home Free".

Please pray for A.J. and his sisters, Angela and Kristine, all teenagers, and the rest of the family. The Lakeland community is stunned by this tragic loss.

My mom, and my dad...I never dreamed that both would be gone before I even turned 40....I still miss them daily...

Also, coming up in November is another anniversary of loss. My friend, Gary Viegelahn who passed an untimely death back in 91. I remember him helping keep teens off the streets in Laurium with one of the last 'teen centers', among other youth related activities. Often times for youths that would not find direction from home or school. It was a loss to both the community, MTU, where he taught, and to my life as he was a friend.

On a brighter note, I believe that all were ready to meet the Good Lord's open arms.

Thank you! Thank you Charlie for posting this picture that was taken by my husband. It is especially fitting for the month of October since our beloved little Shih Tzu, WonTon, died on October 2. He seemed to be rejuvenated by his stay at our cottage on Sandy Lake this summer and enjoyed this sunset with us. He will be missed by our whole family.

By Liz, Ohio on Thursday, October 31, 2002 - 03:30 pm:

Mr. Dave Coltman would ask me at 1st Baptist what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I would say, "Teacher!" He then gave me a coin from his pocket. His godly joy has inspired me despite the fact that I'm not pursuing teaching. I will miss seeing him.

I have been gone from the Copper Country for TOO long. I can not remember where Sandy Lake is. Can someone please refresh my memory? Toivo? Anyone? The picture is a WOW! Thanks!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, October 31, 2002 - 08:33 pm:

I wish we could make it a WOW, but the original resolution was only 640 x 480. That's something to keep in mind, for all who take shots which might eventually appear on the Pasty Cam. To be a Wallpaper of the Week, it needs to be 1600 x 1200.

The presence of so much low light detail in today's shot at this resolution is a testament to Gene's steady hand and a quality camera.

Sandy Lake is southeast of Winona, which is off of M-26 midway between Toivola and Mass City.

Pat, I remember your dad pulling me out of the snow bank one cold winter night in the late 60's.
The 'girls' were out 'tooling around' and made a bad turn by the Flooring Mill. He was on his way home and stopped to help us out. (I was glad I didn't have to do any explaining to my mom) :-)

I'm so glad that my mom, my kids and I were still up in the Copper Country when Dave Coltman passed away and that we were able to attend his memorial service. What a inspiring song leader he was at 1st Baptist! He really helped you to praise the Lord through the music. Dave was also my 9th grade English teacher at Calumet High, and helped me adjust to a "large" high school after coming from the one room school in Copper Harbor.

His memorial service was so beautiful. Pastor Nolen gave an excellent message. He read the story of the rich man and Lazarus, pointing out how you will not get to heaven, and then compared that with the fact that only through repentance and turning away from sin and putting your trust in Jesus Christ can you be assured of eternal life. He made it so clear and simple that later that day my seven year old son prayed to receive Christ as his Savior!! What a joy that Dave Coltman's testimony is continuing even after he is with the Lord. What a joy to know that both my children now are assured of a home in Heaven!

Thank-you, Charlie, for adding my grandfather to the memorial list. He was not a UP miner, but did work in the coal mines in Ohio and served faithfully in WWII . . . I'd like to add a memorial to my grandmother Kathleen Clemons as well, who passed 13 years ago on Halloween. That's a wonderful photograph!

In loving memory of our son Jim , brother Dennis, and Mom & Dad (Boots & Patsy), who are all sadly missed. They all loved Sandy Lake and threw more fish back than they ever kept. We are so fortunate to have so many good memories of times shared with them at Sandy Lake. Memories we will cherish forever. Thanks for sharing the beautiful sunset.

By Julie from Novi on Friday, November 8, 2002 - 02:47 pm:

To Bob & Darlene - We can only hope that the people buying the lots for sale on Sandy Lake appreciate the beauty of our lake. This picture was taken from the dock at my family's cottage (the Gazvoda's) and is looking right across the lake at where the lots are being developed and sold. We sure hope the view doesn't change too much! You are right, the best family memories are made at Sandy Lake. Oh, and send some of those fish down the lake so my kids can get some excitement catching them!
