Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 07:37 am:

The trees work for about 4 or 5 months to clothe themselves in green. The garments turn colors... then turn loose. A big birch in our backyard is dropping them so fast, it looks like a snow storm. Wait a minute... that IS a snow storm.

As an extra bonus on today's Cam, local weather legend John Dee files a traffic report from down in the valley, reminding us to watch for wildlife along our color tour route.

By Dan U, Silver City, MI on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 07:55 am:

Nice pic of the leaves, Charlie. I'm envious.

We didn't have too much red in our fall colors down
here. Not much snow either. I was too busy to go on our
annual trip to Mirror Lake Cabin in the Porkies State
Park this week, but my wife Patty did. She was
expecting walk out in snow, but it didn't happen. I guess
we can't blame John Dee for that. It would be a great
photo op to have snow while we still have leaves on the
trees.

By Kate, CA on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 08:12 am:

Zman, Wow! It's wallpaper for me! Can almost
smell the leaves.

By ashley, mi on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 08:47 am:

wow those leaves look great what kind of digital camera do you use? i sit here drinking my morning coffee checking pasty and a big wow!! really nice and up close pic of leaves!!!

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 08:52 am:

Get off of the road, Bossie. Can you rope 'em from the 4-wheeler?

By Skeeter, in da UP on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 09:30 am:

Zman, where did you get that idea? How original, a carpet of leaves for wallpaper! Gotta love it!

By Karen P, MN on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 10:17 am:

Was this a planned move from the high pastures to the low for winter (a la Urban Cowboys) or an escape? Why did the cattle cross the road? I'll laugh about this all day. Thanks for both pictures.

By jack, id on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 10:27 am:

why did they cross the road? to get to the "udder" side, dont cha know, eh?

By TL - South Carolina on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 10:44 am:

Would that qualify as a "moo-ving violation"?

By displaced yooper on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 10:53 am:

They cross the road to prove to the possums that it can be done.

By Marsha, Genesee and Aura on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 11:22 am:

Hey, Dan of Fenton! How did you know about the wild hogs in Point Abbaye? Was it from the article in the Flint Journal? As far as I know they've been as close as a mile from our cottage in Aura. If they've been on my road I haven't heard yet.

By yoopertransplant on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 11:57 am:

Are we almost done "milking" all the puns on this one?

By Rice Lake Alison on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 02:34 pm:

What's the beef? You don't like puns?

By cowtown illinois on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 03:21 pm:

Don't have a cow, man! Just steer around em!

By Auntie on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 04:05 pm:

Holy Cow!

By Candy, ca on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 04:07 pm:

You think they'd have been more at home in beautiful downtown Bovine

By noah, torchlake twp on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 05:09 pm:

A true taffic jam in the Keweenaw. It looks like the jersey turnpike at rush hour.

By The Z-Man, Ontonagon,Mi on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 06:20 pm:

Ashley, I use a Olympus C-4040 camera,Olympus FL-40 flash,Olympus B-300 tele lens. Lots of my bird
shots at my gallery page are shot with this camera
controlled by my computer. The camera I have located outside on my feeder. Have a look at
www.pbase.com/z/zbird.

Skeeeeter, I obtained this idea from a computer
at work that has a background similar. Was that your picture??? I am open for any more ideas.
I am concentrating this week on reflections.

Thanks
The Z-Man

By Mike da valley on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 07:23 pm:

For sale;9 escape artists.

By js, MI on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 07:59 pm:

Got milk?

By Jeff Illinois on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 08:00 pm:

In my line of work I sometimes get off the main highways and hit the backroads. Today was such a day I was in Northern Indiana, and joyfully took a county road to avoid your usual four laner. Two detours later...it was like the opening of the movie "Hoosiers"...just me on company gas and a old two lane black top road. Almost as pretty as driving up to Copper Harbor with your girlfriend from college to Fort Wilkenson.

By Ken from da UP on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 11:23 pm:

Hei, Zman, What a beautimous pic! Simple things work the best, don't they? The reds are not so brilliant down here in Cornell. But they are falling fast. My Walnut trees are bare and the birch is just about. The tamaracks around here are sure pretty now. Just gold! The beasts look more like beefers than dairy. Just out for the exercise, right? :o) Those leaves, Holy Wah!

By Ken from da UP on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 11:25 pm:

Gotta make like a tree now. and leave. (sorry) :o)

By Ryan School Alum on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 11:53 pm:

They not only make nice wallpaper, they make great placemats, too. Have the kids pick up some of their favorite leaves and iron them between two sheets of waxed paper.

By Dave, Dearborn, MI. on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 12:23 am:

Yes, yes, yes, make that a wallpaper please!

By mickey, mi on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 12:50 am:

Anyone out there remember when cows were free to roam to towns in the Copper Country? They were let out of the barns after milking in the morning and were rounded up for evening milking. Had to be careful where you stepped those days.

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 08:45 am:

Hey Marsha. I read about the hogs on freep.com. Only get the Flint Journal on weekends. Too busy to read it sometimes.

By yooper in indiana on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 09:01 am:

When I was a youngster, spending my summers at Bete Gris, there was a cow that roamed whereever she wanted. Sookie was her name at the Perrong Cottage and yes, one had to watch the cow 'pasties'. But the scalded creme was really good and do miss it.

By ashley, mi on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 10:07 am:

nice camera, very clear pictures!! i have a new sony camera and am happy with it, but.. i want a really good one and don't mind paying about $3,000 for a good camera.

By ashley, mi on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 10:08 am:

wow that page on birds is great!!! wow.. really nice and so clear.

By emil, Ishp. MI. on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 10:38 am:

To Jeff from Illinois- - Fort Wilkenson? Where is that? I was in Champlain, Illinois once. Too flat. no trees. too many college kids.

By Pegg, Fla on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 12:05 pm:

To Ken from da UP, The bovines look like beefers to me too. Hope they are not future pasty meat. Nice pics of leaves, wish I were there. Got down to 60 on my porch in Central Florida last night. It's about time for some cooler weather. BOOM!!! The space shuttle Atlantis just passed by on it's way to land at the Cape. It shook the windows, made the dogs bark, and about knocked me out of my chair. It's one of the few neat things about being in FL. I have a book called Orbit from the National Geographic Society that has groovy pictues of the U.P. taken from the shuttle...super cool.

By ls/nj on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 02:05 pm:

"it looks like the jersey turnpike..." You know, I had to come back and reread it after lunch to get that one. That's the most pun I've had all day!

By Martha K., Pinckney, MI on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 02:42 pm:

What's really going on in that picture is that the cows are moo-ving away from the guy in maize and blue, looking for the guy in green and white. (Uh-oh, I'm in trouble now, aren't I?)

By js, mi on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 03:06 pm:

Nothing like good, old fashioned holstein....I mean wholesome pun.....I mean fun! Okay,I know, we're stretching it a bit now!

By Curt B arizona on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 03:53 pm:

By Connie, WI on Friday, October 25, 2002 - 04:43 pm:

those leaves are just something else...and the cows...just spectacular. you know it really makes me feel good to see animals so alive, especially after my parrot's surgery. poor little guy. can you believe that lerangitus is near fatal for birds?

oh well, i guess we all have a cross to bear...

god bless everyone

By Fran,Ga on Saturday, November 2, 2002 - 03:03 pm:

There are some terms that are unique to the copper Country-like cow pasties, panking snow and I'm sure there are others I can't think of at the moment.

By tyhy on Thursday, January 8, 2004 - 01:24 pm:
