Doug Smith sends us this classic view of Superior's shoreline. This morning looking out the window here on the north (west) side of the Keweenaw, the sky and the waves look identical, although I think Doug took this on the south (east) shore.

Boy, that water looks cold and fierce. I wouldn't want to volunteer to stick my toes in there any time soon. Maybe next July or so. But it is a beautiful picture. You sure can tell it's fall by the color of the water.

That picture just makes me hear the wind and the waves pounding the shoreline. How I miss falling asleep to such a beautiful noise.

nah-- lake Superior is the warmest in the fall! I figure as long as the air temperature is warmer than the water, the temp is rising... But that's just me, and yous guys know how I like to go swimmin!

The power of the lake is always so awe inspiring isn't it? Some things words cannot do justice to and Lake Superior is one of them.

Where was the picture taken? If it is the south shore of Keweenaw, it would be somewhere between Bete Gris and Keweenaw Point. I think it's on the north shore.

I need to tell you that I took on Superior once in July, and the ONLY way I could get in there was to go in inch by inch and let my body go numb! I have NEVER experienced anything like that in my life! You could have stoned me, and I wouldn't have felt a thing.

The crazy thing is... I want to do it again! .

Alex, you brought back memories of Lake Superior at Presque Isle in Marquette. As a kid I discovered there were two ways to get in the water. Inch by inch, as you did, or run and jump right in. Which one you chose depended on how much courage you had that day, or how much daring was going on. Or if you had a big brother with you. But you HAD to go into the water.

Oct 9, 2002. Hi you Yoopers from the Nations Capitol. Greetings from a former Yooper and surviver/witness of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon; (I posted an ad in the Gazette and L'Anse Sentinel regarding the 9/11 event at that time) Gorgeous photo of Lake Superior, by the way. Brings back old and wonderful memories of my childhood in the town of Keweenaw Bay, MI where I was born and raised. Yes, I'm coming back to retire from my Federal job to my property along the beautiful Keweenaw Bay of Lake Superior in near future, hopefully.

Thanks for the beautiful photo and memories of Lake Superior. Your emails are more than welcome, I would love to hear from you.

P.S. Say I miss those pasties too. If anyone has a good pasty recipe, I would love to have it.

Yup, that ol' Lake Superior water will kill or cure anything. When I was pregnant with my son, I went skinny dipping at the end of July at Little Girl's Point and went into premature labor shortly thereafter-had my son 6 weeks early(only a 4 pounder).I guess he figured the accomodations were going downhill and he wanted to relocate to someplace warmer! To this day, my son (now 26) has an aversion to cold temps and snow. But I would never miss the chance to swim in the Gitchee Gumee even if I go numb!

This looks like how the lake would always be when we were kids and went swimming in it. No calm waters and hot temperatures for us. Oh no, we only went to Lake Superior on the windiest (and consequently coolest) days in the summer because the waves were so great to play in. It took less than five minutes for the water to numb your body so you couldn't feel the rocks under your feet that the waves kept bashing you down on. And all this before aqua socks and water sandles! I wonder if our parents thought we were crazy.

We wonder why we have so much arthritis around here? We all grew up swimming in Lake Superior! As kids we would slowly inch our way into the lake, numbing as we went along. Once we were totally numb we could stay in there all day, or until we got hungry, go into the camp for some of mother's fresh bakery, then start all over with the numbing process! We were in bathing suits from the time school got out in June until the first day again in September. Oh what memories these pictures of the lake bring back! Thank you!

This shot was taken at Five Mile Point on the grounds of the Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn, where my wife Linda and I spent a couple wonderful days last week.

I thought you could only go swimmin in that lake after a good sauna! Or at least that's what the folks used to tell me - 'course they walked to school 5 miles- in the drifts - uphill both ways too! In hoton and hancock that might not be a joke!

I remember Lake Superior when my family would go to water works or McLain state park and as i remember it you would walk across the buring sands to the cool rocks and then into the frigid waters of the only great lake of superior and as you got use to the temp you could find areas that were like bath water, however step two feet to your right or left and superior would bite you with the frigid cold of ice water being poored down you back on a 100 degree day, God how i miss It, take care all for now but i shall be home again and someday for good.

What an exciting shot! You can just feel the freshness of the wind and waves. WOW for sure! Used to just run and dive right in when I was younger. Now I'd probably use a stick to check the temp. :o) (Saw that on Suomi Kutsuu once, a long time ago.) Kiitos, kiitos, Charlie and Doug.

I went all the way up to my neck in Lake Superior at the beginning of August. And I wasn't even too numb. I made sure they took a picture of me and the kids in the lake so we could prove it! It was a hot day and it was very refreshing. We were at Agate Beach near Toivola.

Can we make this photograph the WOW for the week?

Breaks my heart to see this picture. How fast can I get to the Keweenaw? Not fast enough. Especially since I work five miles from where the Montgomery County, Maryland sniper killed his first victims. Those of you who live there now, cherish and protect what you have!

Maybe when the Maryland sniper is finally caught, his punishment will be to engage in a contest with our favorite lake to tread water for 60 minutes on national TV in our beloved gitchee-gumee when the waves get to about 18 feet in mid-november. Also, my compliments to the photographer who took a wonderful photo of the only great lake to have this wonderfully beautiful autumn fury. The other lakes can get intense in a storm, but not to the degree of the almighty Superior. Brawny and mesmorizing all in one!

I grew up swimming in Lake Superior too, and summer just isn't summer until I can get in there. There is no swim like a Lake Superior swim. I love it :)
