We conclude each month with a peaceful scene from the U.P., and a tribute to friends who have passed on. Thanks to Paula Shipman of Texas for a lovely setting sun at Sedar Bay.

Two of the friends we remember this month were often part of the team of pasty makers you have seen on these pages. Lila Sitar and Hilda Karvonen were both residents at Still Waters for many years, before moving to more advanced care.

Arvo Lohela was born in Laurium in 1919, a recipient of the George Gipp Scholar Athlete Award at Calumet High School, and a bomber pilot in WWII. Another son of the Keweenaw, Jack Uren grew up in Hancock, attended MTU, worked for years for GM in Detroit, and always loved the Copper Country.

Gladys Kipina is one special lady I will personally always remember. In all of my years at Still Waters, Gladys was faithful in supporting the Home each month with a gift from her limited means. It was her way of expressing her support and love for all of the folks involved in the care of the elderly. Gladys will be missed.

As always, you are welcome to leave a note of rememberance on this page.

Elwood "Hollywood" LaRochelle passed away this month as well. Every child who grew up in the Calumet-Laurium area over the past 50 years knew Hollywood, a gentle giant of a man whose participation in area parades and other events was legendary.

Sunset at Sedar Bay is such a beautiful picture! We all mourn the loss of special loved ones ... The picture reminds me of this:
"Life's beginning is like a sunrise ...
Its ending is like a sunset."
Sincere sympathy to all that have faced this experience recently. May your precious memories be a comfort to you!
