The sun has been on our side of the equator since last spring, but now it's time for folks on the south side of the globe to enjoy longer days, shorter nights. Here in the U.P., can snow be far behind?

Tom Harris from Wisconsin provides todays photo, with a reminder why they call it Gull Rock. Right off the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Actually, because of the refracting effect of the atmosphere on the suns rays, 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of no direct sunlight occurs about 3 days after the equinox.

Keeping an eye out for snow, as usual! Had some ice pellets hit me while I was at the Sturgeon River Falls yesterday afternoon.

Great Pic, I just love lighthouses, there is a spooky calm about the lonely lights that guide the ships though the roughest of waters and darkest of nights!
My fiance Doug and I have collected lighthouse stuff ever since the day we were engaged at the Eagle River lighthouse, and we have lil mini statues of them all over our livingroom.
Unfortunatly never had the chance to see this light before (Gull Rock) can someone tell me the best way to go about and where to go to see this light. If its even possible to see it from land..or is it out in the middle of the lake?

Are the leaves starting to change? I am coming up to the Keewenaw this weekend and hope to see some colors!!! It is always beautiful there but the color makes it a little more spectacular!!!

Ditto. We are hoping to be up this weekend to close up our cottage in Aura. We're hoping to see color in the Huron Mountains and the Keweenaw on our way to The Jampot and on up to the Harbor.

What a great picture. Is this the light that is about 1.5 miles East of the end of the penninsula out in Superior? I also would like an update on the fall color out on the Keweenaw. I was up there about 4 weeks ago but can't stay away-- so I plan to return to God's country to see the fall color and do some fishing and kayaking. I also love to take pictures of all the greatlakes lights. Oh,isn't retirement "a good thing"?

Great shot by Tom Harris. The last time I was out there was probably 15 years ago, I still recall the coolness coming off the ever so cool water.

I spoke with my parents today out by Twin Lakes to check the color scene because I too was thinking of heading up this weekend. They said it's barely starting to turn where they are. So, I'm going to wait a week to go up and hopefully I'll hit the color. Who knows? It does always seem to be a gamble!

The colors here in the Copper Country are just beginning to appear in a few isolated places -- at least in the Houghton to Calumet area. With our late spring I wonder if may see colors a little later than usual. Nice to see this pitcher of Gull Lighthouse. My Dad's Great Uncle was a Keeper at this Lighthouse 02/14/1868 to 07/27/1877,(Stephen Cocking).

Naomi,Gull Rock is one of the sites along the tour through Keweewaw Excursions out of Houghton. Go to Pasty archives there's a great sunset pic...and all about the excursions...I'd like to tell what month but this 56k is..is slow :}
