As we enter the final week of summer, very little autumn color has begun to appear yet in the Keweenaw. The next 2 weeks should see the most radical change of the year. We noticed yesterday a note about Mt. Bohemia to offer ski lift rides weekend-after-next to view the brilliance of the Keweenaw hills. Sounds interesting.

Let us know when fall color arrives in your area.

The old lawn chair is an intriguing picture. Maybe its owner doesn't come around because it's busted. I am downstate and we have had such a dry summer, the only leaves that are colored are so because they've turned brown from lack of moisture.

By John Kaleita, Keweenaw County, Michigan on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 10:29 am:

On the usual Fall colorful roads to Gay almost
all was still green as of Sunday, September 15.

By jim_greenville,mi on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 12:59 pm:

thanks for update on fall a coming in the u.p. lawn chair was last used by people who were relaxing and enjoying the scenery in GOD'S country. they left it for others to use and enjoy also. love that scotland like thistle photo.

By tm on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 01:49 pm:

Enjoy the green a little longer, it took so long for the leaves to come out this spring, plus they're enjoying a year without the worms.

By Mike B, Pittsburgh, wishin I was still in the Yoop on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 03:44 pm:

Our local news here reported that it was 37 degrees overnight UP there. If the nights keep going like that, it won't be long and you'll be asking when the snow is gonna stop ;)

By PA,MI on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 05:19 pm:

What's the name of the plant?

By ashley, mi on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 05:20 pm:

i can't believe that summer is gone already..

WINTER HERE WE COME!!!

By Jan, Milford on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 06:19 pm:

That's Thistle that you are looking at. The bees and butterflies love the flowers and the goldfinches loooooove the seeds.

I was just commenting to my husband today that the way the trees are still green down here with random red and orange branches once every so often looks exactly like what we saw in the Keweenaw over Labor Day weekend.

By Roxanne, Oregon on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 08:17 pm:

I remember fighting my sisters for chairs just like that in my neighbors yard.....will always miss da U.P., especially at this time of year....

By Ken from da UP on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 10:23 pm:

The color is on it's way. Mimi and I went up to Ishpeming yesterday and between Palmer and CR 480 there were a few spots of orange and red. Also up by Suomi location. I sure like the cooler temps at night! Supposed to be almost 80 deg. tomorrow. But it does beat buying bottled gas for the furnace already. :o) The colors on the Thistle sure look pretty. I have a few of them where the barn used to be.

By Jan, Milford on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 10:52 pm:

Quick question: Family and I stopped along 41 on our trip - I believe it was around West Ishpeming - and took photos of an abandoned drive-in movie theatre on the south side of the road. (Screen gone, but ticket booth, marquee and speaker poles still standing.) Can anyone tell me where exactly we were, what was the name of the drive-in and when it closed down? We were very intrigued by it. Thanks.

By Candy, CA, where we still have drive-ins close by on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 11:24 pm:

The drive-in is in Ely Township. It's been closed for many years, but when it was open it was the Evergreen Drive-in. It began as a "regular" drive-in, but transitioned into something less savory in the late 80s and early 90s. I believe it closed in the late 90s, but someone from Marquette County will have to confirm that.

Charlie, et. al.:
I really enjoy your website. My father and his family were from the Calumet/Laurium area; and I
have visited many times. It truly is a wonderful
place; and I love your pictures of it.
This past weekend, our local Daily Herald in Illinois ran an article in the travel section all
about the Keweenaw Peninsula. It told a little
about the history of the area, the fall colors, the copper mines, and other places of interest.
All-in-all, a very complimentary article.
However, I wouldn't expect to see many visitors
because of this article. In the first paragraph,
he says "And the road that takes you there --U.S.
Route 31 -- begins (or ends) in Fla.". In the
second he mentions "...sitting alongside Route 31,
is a "snowmeter"...".

Love the site!
Keep up the good work!

By Mark Pasich, Kaleva, Michigan on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 12:09 am:

well at least route 31 is in michigan!! LOL It makes is to Mackinaw City and down to Mobile, Alabama! Pretty close. May the west side of the Lower with in flooded with people looking for copper mines!

By zstl on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 12:47 am:

Sedler in Illinois ~ that would be highway 41 not 31, hopefully the article was correct and it was just a typo here, otherwise the "trolls" (those that live under the bridge) will enjoy the tourists looking for the Keweenaw peninsula.

By UP'er on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 07:32 am:

Can you pitcher dem trolls goin round in circles wonderin where dey were?

By Mike R, New Berlin WI on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 09:22 am:

The Evergreen was West of Ishpeming but was on the North side of US 41. It was a competitor of my father's drive-in, the Airport, which was in Negaunee Township. Right next to, you guessed it, Marquette County Airport.

By Finngal & Finnguy in Elkton, FL on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 10:20 am:

OTR truckers, left UP last Oct, been in Florida since early June, been to the beach only twice! Look forward to Pasty Cam's UP pictures when off the road. Will miss the fall colors...first time in 50 years!

By Jan on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 03:19 pm:

I am certain that the drive-in we stopped at was on the south side of the road. Blue marquee, cedar shake roof over the ticket booth and there was an abundance of evergreens surrounding the entrance/exit and the sign. So many, in fact, that I commented that it was a sure bet that the name probably had something to do with the trees! Thanks for the info.

By sam on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 11:11 pm:

there was a picture of that entrance on here a while back, maybe a year or so.......

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 - 04:06 am:

Sam, you're probably thinking of last August 29th when these shots of the old Hiawatha Drive-in at Chassell appeared on the Pasty Cam (courtesy of Nancy Nelson):

Here's a link to the original appearance of this memorable spot.

Almost all the leaves fell off my tree

By Jan, Milford on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 - 03:48 pm:

This is the drive-in we stopped at a few weeks ago on the way to Copper Harbor! We didn't go through Chassel on the way home, so no wonder I didn't see it a second time and make a mental note! Sorry to have confused anyone. Thanks for all the help. It's been fun jogging everyone's memory.

By Yooper in da heart on Thursday, September 19, 2002 - 09:04 pm:

Remember, it takes a little rain and cool
temperatures to help the colors along

By Jen Collins, MI on Saturday, September 21, 2002 - 05:26 pm:

Those chairs are a reminder of the times when people made time to sit and talk to eachother and soak in what is beautiful. They are empty now because people are to busy now a days to sit and be with family and talk about things. So its a sad thing the chairs are empty.
