Yesterday's Pasty Cam - inside the cave looking out - really left me curious about how Scott Falls appears from the opposite perspective. This morning the old photo inbox had this note from Melissa H. of Grand Ledge:

"Here is Scott Falls from the front, in case you're interested in another view. I took this picture last Tuesday on my way back downstate from 5 fun days in the Keweenaw-- wish I still lived there!"
As mentioned Tuesday, we are receiving so many great shots these days... while all set in the U.P., many photos worthy of National Geographic, as well as coverage of current events. We probably need another full time staff person just to keep up with it.

By the way, yesterday I ran into Sandy Britton - you may recall her regular column "Mendota Musings" a few years ago. Sandy told me exactly where to go on the overlook at Grand Marais Harbor, the spot depicted by the postcard we had on Sunday. Around sunset last night Edie and I drove up M-26 to take a look. Sure enough, Cousin Jack and Paul Freshwater were right... The high curve just before Lake Bailey looks down perfectly on the scene below - I even found the trees in the original view (much taller, of course). Though I had the Pasty Cam along, light was too low to capture the scene. But (Ken and Toivo) believe me, the artist back in the 30's was looking down on Grand Marais Harbor, not Copper Harbor.

Thanks for the pictures of Scott Falls. I'm told that my dad gave me my first shower under those falls -- probably in the summer of '62 when we lived in AuTrain (a stone's throw from the falls).

Thanks Charlie for confirming that it is Grand Marais. Like I said, I spent a lot of time there shooting at ducks. Thought I might be losing my memory when Toivo said it was Copper Harbor. Sandy, I miss your daily coverage of the wild life activity at Lac La Belle.

Hi Charlie, Thanks for using my picture! I'm proud to have it posted on this great site.

Hi Melissa! Great picture!

Rich and I stopped at the same waterfall last week too! What I wouldn't give to be living in the UP again!

Any yoopers out there see the northern lights last night? I watched them from Wads-- over the parking lot lights and everything! They were amazing!

Hey Wendy! It was too bad we missed each other on our trips north, it would have been cool to see you guys. Some day we'll be next door neighbors up there again....

Sounds like the northern lights were great last night....anyone get a pic to share?

I really miss Sandy's musings as well.

Aimee - I certainly did see the northern lights last night, every time I woke up and looked out the windows I had to get up and sit in the window seat a while. The period between 5 and 5:30am this morning was particularly awesome. No pix, though - what I enjoyed most about it were the second-by-second changes, and I'd need some sort of super-video camera to capture that. I will try to work up a descriiption in my journal tonight - http://www.aviewfromthefield.com/

According to http://www.spaceweather.com/ it caught everybody by surprise. It sure was a good show, well worth losing the sleep over!

I miss Sandy and her musings! How about a spot in the Pasty site devoted just for her? Will be at Scott Falls Saturday and then on to Eagle Harbor for a week.. Wish it was longer.

I remember running under this waterfall about 20 years ago when my mother and I took a day trip. Great memories...

Hei, Charlie, Thanks for clearing that up for us. I guess if we can still learn a thing or two there's still hope, 'eh? I didn't know there are TWO Grand Marais harbors on the big lake.

By Ken from da UP on Wednesday, September 4, 2002 - 11:54 pm:

Oh, yes, the Northern Lights were very nice last night. I always take a look out the window during my 'pit stops'.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, September 5, 2002 - 04:50 am:

Ken,

There are at least three Grand Marais Harbors on the Big Lake. The one in Minnesota, the one here on the Keweenaw Peninsula, and the one between Munising and Whitefish Point, which, by the way, is a previous Golden Pasty award winner. I wouldn't be surprised if there is one or more Grand Marais on the Canadian side, too.

The waterfall is cool! But so is the frog![Or is it a toad? I always get those mixed up.]
