On our cruise through Lighthouse Week, today's triple play gives different perspectives of this unique Lake Superior beacon. Kurt Boginski captured an aerial view in the first scene. Next, Andy Ewert heads toward shore, while his passenger Jon Hopper grabs a ghostly twilight portrait. Finally, a favorite from the Archives, Alex Protzel's Gull Rock Sunrise, which made the cover of the Pasty Cam Calendar a couple of years back.

Triple play for you equals triple treat for us! What a great site to wake up to!

Can I move into that Lighthouse? . I'd do anything to live in it!

Because of this website, I will probably uproot my family and move back to the U.P. sometime in the next couple of years!

(I'd sure like to move into that Lighthouse!)

where exactly is that lighthouse? I don't remember ever seeing that one. Great pictures!!!

By Matt A. wish I were there, Fenton, MI on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 - 10:20 am:

Jeff,

Take US 41 to the end, drive down the trail for about 8(?) miles, hang a left, go about another 2 miles, crossing a beaver pond and pretty rough road, and then pull out your binoculars when you get out to High Rock bay. Gull Rock sits about 3 miles off the tip of the Keweenaw. (
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=14&T=2&X=139&Y=1642&Z=16&W=2)

While you're out there, don't forget to visit the remnants of the Keweenaw Rocket Range (http://www.gt.org/keweenaw-rocket-base/ )

I've fallen asleep to its beacon many times at High Rock, always wishing that I could get out there to see it. I guess this is as close as I will get for now!

6 Days and counting before I get back up there again!

Oh, and I can't resist this plug too. If you're up there Aug 3-4, stop by Fort Wilkins and see Battery D, 1st Mich Light Artillery. We garrison the fort for the weekend putting on artillery and firearms demonstrations. Saturday evening has some of the best music available by Homegrown Strings from Ishpeming. It's a neat chance to see the fort with almost a full compliment of soldiers.

I've heard of this lighthouse, but never have seen it until now...one word -Amazing-especially the ariel pic.
Well I agree with Alex, I think it would be a awesome experience to spend a night at that lighthouse, especially when Lake Superior shows her fury..WOW!
Well I knew this week of lighthouses would be full of amazing sites and WOW's- Its off to a great start thats for sure: )

Is there a map that can show Rock Harbor & Gull Rock in relationship to each other? Great Pictures. Love those Lighthouses!

By Cousin Jack on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 - 12:12 pm:

Beautiful shot, Kurt!
Gull Rock Lighthouse was reckoned the most rugged and dangerous keep on the Great Lakes and it isn't hard to see why. Those guys(and their wives) must have been tough as railroad spikes. For anyone interested in the history of this lighthouse, I highly recommend Terry Pepper's website(with some very interesting historical links in blue):

http://www.terrypepper.com/lights/superior/gull-rock/index.htm

And check out his homebase at terrypepper.com if you want to learn about other Great Lakes lighhouses. This is really an exceptional collection.

Thanks to Matt for that Keweenaw Rocket Range link! I checked out a couple of the old pictures and they are priceless. Will definitely have to spend more time there soaking it all in.

Great photos of the Gull Rock Lighthouse!! I've only seen the light once, from the air, and was impressed. Although, I've spent many nights at nearby Schatter's Lake, I've never seen the lighthouse from land. These photos bring great justice to the beautiful tip of the Keweenaw.
Thanks for the scenery!

Just when you think the light house pictures couldn't get any better, THEY DO, THANK YOU

Charlie,

Is it too late to get in some pics? While not a native, I've visited and been enthralled with the God's hand in this area. I have some shots of the Whitefish Point and some falls, etc to pass along.

By the way, I know you hear this alot, but I really do love the site. My aunt grew up on the Keweenaw and I never met a more gracious lady.

By Bob in Green Bay on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 - 02:13 pm:

I've been there many times and have often wondered how the structure has survived the big storms on Lake Superior.
Another great picture on my favorite web!!!

By JAD, Oskar on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 - 02:14 pm:

Thanks to Cousin Jack and Matt for their links re the lighthouses. What a storehouse of informa-tion! In May of 1990 Capt. Kipela of the Isle Royale Queen was selling trips out to see the Coast Guard vessel, Mesquite, which had gone aground off Keweenaw Point. I took the trip and got photos not only of the Mesquite but of Gull Rock which we passed by quite closely. NO WAY would I want to spend time, ANY TIME, on that rock during a Big Lake storm! 100 X 150 ft. of rock and 12 ft. alt. at its highest point!!

By Tydnnots on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 - 02:53 pm:

I absolutely love the photos of the lighthouses that have been recently posted! Though this one has to be the best so far! Hey - no far - I have dibs on living there! Keep up the good work - bringing Heaven to us poor souls who can only glimpse at it thru our monitors!

These pictures are breathtaking!

By Nancy Nelson, WI on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 - 05:43 pm:

Beautiful pictures of Gull Rock--can't begin to imagine what it would be like to be out there when Superior is in full fury--must be one tough building.

EM from MI--Lake Superior is a wolf's head. Rock Harbor is on Isle Royale National Park, which is the wolf's eye. Gull Rock is off the Keweenaw peninsula, which is the wolf's slightly open mouth.

I have one question after looking at that aerial view. Where do you dock the boat that got you out there???? This Friday my sister and nieces and I head on up. Can't wait!

By DM on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 - 05:19 am:

Been to Highrock...and have seen this lighthouse. It's one rugged ride tho...took us 45 minutes in a 4-wheel drive, once we got off the blacktop...there's some awesome agate territory out there too...stunning pics. Thanks!

By Brion Beauchene, Racine, WI on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 - 07:58 am:

After looking at the map I was wondering if anyone lives or visits Manitou Island. My parents grew up in the Keeweenaw and I have been to most places but never there and have never talked to anyone that has.

By EM on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 - 09:28 am:

Thanks Nancy. I've seen Gull Rock in the winter by snowmobile, just wasn't sure about Rock Harbor. Never been to Isle Royale.

Just to let everyone in Georgia know:
Thursday Aug. 1 at 7pm the PBS network GPTV will air
Legendary Lighthouses. Titled 'Lighthouses of the
Great Lakes' - the lighthouses of Isle Royal National
Park and Apostle Islands National Park.

By Steve in Virginia on Thursday, July 25, 2002 - 04:03 pm:

My wife and I, along with other family members have been out by Gull Rock. Never had enough guts to try and land there. But it was neat!

By GC/old Mohawk guy on Thursday, July 25, 2002 - 05:10 pm:

That Keweenaw rocket base stuff was hilarious.
Reminds me of the stories in the 50's about extraterrestrial sightings and pick ups in Keweenaw.
Maybe that's why I mow my lawn in circles.
BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!!!
