Some great weather lately for a camping trip to Isle Royale. After the long boat ride, and trekking up to the high ground for a view of Canada, we are greeted by this young moose on his way to bed.

Thanks to Captain Ben Kilpela for the shot of Isle Royale Queen III, a view from atop the east end of Brockway. The island scenes are from Bryan Howard, spending a few days with his dad Gary, roughing it in the wild. Never know who you'll run into out here in the woods.

Come back tomorrow as Bryan promises to have more Isle Royale pictures for us.

Nice shot of the IRQIII!!! I can't wait to see the Queen in person and to wake up by the sound of her passing the house on the way out of the harbor! I'll be there on Sunday! Can't Wait!!!

Nice shot of the Queen heading out for the Sunset Cruise, Benny! Thanks! That kayaker out by Porter's sure picked the perfect evening to go out. The water is beautiful - just like glass! Looks like it was a beautiful day out on the island, too. Thanks to Bryan Howard for the great pics! Now that my kids are old enough to go, it's time to make a trip out to the Island. It's been far too long!

Almost 40 years ago, spent the summer on Isle Royale working at Rock Harbor Lodge. Beautiful view of "Sleeping Giant", (then called) Fort William/Port Arthur, Ontario. Have taken L.S.D.(lake shore drive) around Superior & seen him up close, years later. Wonderful memories.

Talk about making me wish I was in the Copper Country or on Isle Royale right now! Great photos!

Question. I heard that there was a forest fire in Canada or soemthing and that the smole could be seen from the Keewenaw. I work nights and missed the whole thing (not that I would've wanted to see it. I'll more then likely see the affects when I go out west in Aug.) and was wondering if perhaps some one got knows how it started, etc.

By JAD, Oskar on Thursday, July 18, 2002 - 09:12 pm:

Grizzly -- The smoke crept up the Keweenaw Waterway like early morning heavy fog. And it smelled of smoke! However, it lasted little more than an hour and then dissipated. According to the front page article in the DMG tonight the smoke extended over to Marquette. Also, the fire is about 50 miles N. of Thunder Bay & was probably caused by lightning. Foresters are ap-parently letting it burn. There's speculation that the smoke joined with some from more fires burning in northern Ontario and, with the NW wind (I thought it was more NE-erly), just headed our direction!

Boy would I love to see a good, RECENT picture of 14 Mile Point Light! The newest ones to be found on the web are years old, & we hear it has new owners & new hope. Save the lighthouses!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, July 19, 2002 - 07:21 am:

Karen, we plan to feature lighthouses all next week on the Pasty Cam, and maybe somebody out there has a shot of 14 mile point.

Aimee - I'm curious where your mom was standing when she took the shot across Copper Harbor.

By the way, if you haven't been by the Bridge Cam lately, it has an almost-live shot of the Harbor from the other direction!

Looks like a cloudy day up there(Lift Bridge) this morning. Getting some rain?

Tomorrow my wife Jenny and I will celebrate our five year anniversary. We honeymooned on Isle Royale, and left on the Queen out of Copper Harbor. Great timing, and great pix as always.

By Da Joizy shore Clamdigger on Friday, July 19, 2002 - 01:19 pm:

The fires of Quebec also reached the Joizy shore last week. The acrid smell of smoke had people calling emergency services. One day, the sky became very dark as the smoke clouds moved overhead. It's been all clear for a while now.

It looks like she must have been standing in front of what used to be Shea's cabins, as you see just the tip of Duck Island in the left side of the shot. This is all private property.

Just left the King Copper Motel the day before the picture of the Isle Royal Queen was posted. Enjoyed very much watching her leave and come back to the dock. Couldn't go to the island however because we were traveling with our 2 dogs. We loved every bit of the Keewenaw peninsula.
