Mallery (above) and Justin Kinnun
We heard there were temps reaching the 120's this week in the Southwest states. Only about 60 here in the Keweenaw this morning.

Proud grandparents Paul and Dotty Kinnun sent some shots of these first timers to the U.P., all the way from California. The top picture is near White City, not far from Chassell, the scene of this weekend's strawberry festival.

And how do kids keep cool if there's no big Lake around? Mike Rytkonen's granddaughter from Fond du Lac Wisconsin demonstrates the good old sprinkler technique.
A taste of Summer

Unless you have a boat White City is darn far from Chassell. Boy these pics bring back some great memories of hot dog cookouts at the "pier" at Jacobsville. We used to love to go there. Especially when my dad Ken Thomas came up from Detroit to see us at my Gramma Aittama's farm in Bootjack (we would spend the summers there). He used to pile all us kids in the Station Wagon and head out for a Vollwerths on a stick. How I wish I could be there today!!

Look at those beautiful hostas in the sprinkler picture :)
The kids are sweet, too!

I used to love going to the pier and princess point, but the boat landing on portage lake was considerably warmer. Little Traverse was always a great spot for a quick cool dip for the Aittama clan then stop by Bylkas' store for a nice cool "RedPop". Great memories, I wish I was there right now as it is a balmy 96 here in Fl with a 65% rh factor...

Love the pictures! Really bring back fond memories of going to the lake! But, hey, the temps have not reached 120 yet! And it is a dry heat, kind of like an oven. :) So we call this state Aridzona!

I can remember when there were some of the old foundations left at White City. My Grandfather used to tell me about the times he went out on the excursion boat they had there. Some may still be there. They would be right there where the public acess is before you get to the old Coast Guard Station. Also used to jump off the lighthouse once in awhile too. We usually came across from the Portage Entry. Lots of memories of exploring a few of the islands up the Portage and camping out on them too. Thanks for the wonderful pics.

It was indeed an interesting June this year in Phoenix, AZ...

It was tied for the second hottest June on record, but not for the daily "high" temps -- there were only 11 days with temperatures of 110° or above, and the highest temp so far this year was a fairly wimpy 113° (on June 25 and July 2). We haven't even seen 115° so far this year, never mind the 120° and 122° on June 25 & 26 in 1990!.

The "second hottest June" is mostly attributable to the higher "low" temps recorded in June, with 11 days with a minimum temperature of 80° or above, with a "highest low" of 86° recorded on June 26 & 27.

Our daily minimum temperature is not so much a "nighttime low", but is typically observed within an hour after sunrise.

On 6 of the first 11 days of July we've had daily "low" temperatures of 85° or above -- we were on track to match the all time record high minimum temperature on Tuesday July 9, when the morning low was 93°, but the trace of rain delivered by a late-day thunderstorm brought the daily low down to 87° before midnight.

Cooling degree days for June 2002 = 858.

The summer "monsoon" officially began on July 9; this is the onset of the higher humidities and almost daily possibility of thunderstorms (or more likely just the usual blowing dust and two dozen drops of rain).

After 30+ years in Phoenix, I hardly notice the summer (dry) heat 'til the temp reaches somewhere above 108°. The higher humidities of the summer monsoon season are another story, however!

Coming at you from AZ: I remember June of '90. I was 9 mos pregnant driving to work in the middle of the afternoon with NO air conditioning in my vehicle. Couldn't keep my foot on the accelerator - it felt like it was burning in an oven! Will never forget that day when it reached 120+! My husband was working outside the entire day doing yard work. Crazy man! :)

I certainly miss the beauty of the UP, though. Think of it frequently.

That little girl at the top of the page is just darling. That picture IS worth a thousand words! She's so busy, and so intent, and that's what her little life entails right now....so precious, so innocent....if only kids could teach us grownups how to be.......

Wow. Lots of Zonie/Yooper transplants. I sure am dreaming of the UP summers right about now!

The kids are beautiful!! And so is the UP.

And since temps seem to be the discussion, here in Ventura, the days have been overcast, but humid at the same time. Drove down by the ocean at mid-day and you could see the clouds rolling inland from off the water. Now inland just a few miles it has been HOT. Those are the temperatures you probably hear reported on the news.

I am not sure if the photographer is Dotty or Paul, but those pictures are incredible! The water is so beautiful against the red/orange of Mallery's shirt.
