Yesterday's chat about Smokey the Bear brought back tons of childhood memories, and here's a few more, captured by mom, Kim Beyer. A sweet glimpse of life in the U.P.

We've had some rare days of overpowering heat across the Upper Midwest. Some of the local bank thermometers have been spotted with reading in the 100's. On our way home from Heritage Days on Sunday, it was a little cooler along Five Mile Point road... only 95. Rarely do we see that near Superior's shore.

Just find a way to keep cool :o)

Baby it's hot outside

Kids, Ice Cream Faces, & Smokey The Bear, What wonderful memories, My husband used to work with "Smokey" He was a Forest Fire Officer at the Albion D.N.R. station & enjoyed every little one who dropped by to see him. Thanks for the memories, Kim & Charlie.

Those boys are so cute!!!

We are leaving in two hours for the great UP! We can not wait. We are meeting 30 some people to camp at St Ignace for four days and then on the Muskallonge Lake for 7 days. Will miss the Keweenaw this year - but it will still be the beautiful Upper Michigan and not to be a troll for 11 days.

Look ma, no flies!
Just got home yesterday from Hancock...between the heat and the flies the only place to be is in the water :)
Make sure you bring extra car wash $ for a bug blaster!

This picture reminds me of when I was a kid in Laurium. I lived on Pewabic St. and would go down the street to Locatelli's store for a fudge cicle. And to date myself, it would cost a whole 6 cents. You could get by a little cheaper with a pop cicle for 5 cents. Great memories. One month to go and I'll be vacationing in the Keweenaw; can't wait.

Hey boys, your auntie Kerrie and cousin Kaity are watching you! Big chocolate kisses to all of you too! Love you lots!

Hey David S. (of Flordia) I grew up on Pewabic street as well, I remember listening to all the concerts at Daniel Park -Just a hop skip and jump from my house.
My mom, and her 2 sisters (Anthony's)also grew up on the same block as to the house where I grew up -the houses were right next door to each other..but that house burnt back in 77 or 78 I believe-
I cant wait to be back "home" to Lauium/Calumet -for my next visit...hopefully sometime this summer!!!!

Great pic! Fudgecicles were a semi-weekly summer highlight as a kid. I can still taste'em! That Bancroft Dairy truck rolling into town was a beautiful sight, and George the milkman was, of course, one of my favorite people. I'd race home to catch the delivery - and hopefully receive a tasty, ice cold pay-off for being in the right place at the right time! I think I was 20 years old before I realized that his name wasn't George Bancroft. ;) You had to eat'em quick, tho! They didn't have those handy little drip pans then.

I have really enjoyed these pix since I first found your web site a couple weeks back. Even though I am a resident of the Downer Peninsula, my family and I love to visit the U.P. in our trailer and are planning yet another trip this summer. Also, I have some pix I have taken that I would like to submit for posting (assuming they are good enough) but can't seem to figure out how to submit them.

Ham,

Charlie has mentioned before, you can send your pictures as email attachments to photos@pasty.com.

Say hi to Shem and Japheth for me.

By Ken from da UP on Tuesday, July 2, 2002 - 11:03 pm:

The fudgecicles sure must've tasted good. My favorite was the orange dreamsicles. 'Member them? Temp is down to 74 deg. now. Yesterday it was 97.6 here. Anyone going to Covington for the Finn music festival? A bunch of us will be playing at the multi-purpose bldg. from 11am to 11 pm. Gonna be wondermous!
