Photos from Tim Colborn

By Tim Colborn, Oscoda on Sunday, June 16, 2002 - 06:39 am:

Been cleaning out the shoebox and thought I'd pass some along.

This is a picture of me and my father, Al Witt, stopping at the Cut River Bridge on the way north. This would be around 1961. My father died soon after in a truck accident while hunting in Wyoming.

I remember, later on, that we would leave Detroit early in the morning and then stop at Cut River to cook a big late breakfast of eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast...the works...all over the charcoal grills and eat on the picnic tables.

Here's one of my Great Grandfather William Paull. Not sure where it was taken or what year.

Great Grampa

Wow, thanks Tim for the memories. What a shock when I clicked to my favorite site, and saw this. I am shutting down the computer right now to leave hot AZ to go back to muggy MI. Will be on the road travelling when you read this. Grampa Paull worked for C and H mines, but not sure what year this was taken of him either. Thanks again Charlie for your work on our favorite site on the web.

Hi Tim... What a great photograph of you and your Dad, and also of your Grandfather. I'm sorry that you lost him at such a young age. Always treasure your shoebox of memories.

Here's another link to MDOT's website, their historic bridges site (Interesting reading about all of Michigans historic bridges)...
This page is for the US 2 over Cut River Bridge..

Is the picture of your grandfather your Dad's Dad ?

By Tim in Oscoda on Monday, June 17, 2002 - 01:19 am:

William Paull was my Great Grandfather, His son, also William Paull was my mother's father. Gramps left mining when Mom was very young and moved to the Detroit area. We spent every summer vacation "Up Home" tho...

Thanks Jill for the kind words...photos are my only memories of my father but my "dad" is still going strong...my mother married him and 7 years later and no boy could ask for a better one!

Happy Father's Day Dad!!!

Tim, your Great Grandfather Paull worked at Ahmeek 3&4 Mine just south of Mohawk, in fact, the house in which your mother was born was the nearest house to that mine.

The picture was taken probably in the late 50s or early 60s because the Ahmeek Mines didn't use electric lamps on the miners hats until about 1951, if my memory is correct. The picture was probably taken in front of the smaller engine house that the miners walked near to get to the shaft house.

I knew your Great Grandfather; he was a kind, friendly man.

Such a sweet pic of you and your Dad. I have 3 children and we visit the Cut River Bridge at least once a summer. My sons 11 and 6 love hiking around the grounds. They oddly enough, enjoy hiding pennies in cracks and crevices under the bridge and checking the next year to see if they are still there! (They always are!) I expect my daughter will be the same way. She's a little young yet (almost 4). My husband and I love it too. Thanks for the warm memories in the dead of winter.
