Last weekend I went to Paradise and to see the Tahquanemon Falls once again. While there I spotted these two moose along the side of the road on 123. Within minutes these moose had about 20 people taking their pictures and they didn't seem to mind a bit. They were just standing there in the water, posing pretty watching all of us very closely. This picture was taken 4 miles from Paradise on 123.

This is just incredible. I had no idea that there were moose in the U.P. Must have been quite an experience for you to seem them and to take the picture you did.

There used to be a place called Helltown somewhere between Central and Lac La Belle(near the Montreal river?)where local miners used to drink and carouse. I've tried to locate any surviving remains of the place on a couple of occasions but have come up empty.
Anyone out there know exactly where that Helltown may have been situated?

If memory serves me right take a right on the first road past the Montreal going towards LacLaBelle. One use to get there at the intersection of 41 and the LacLaBelle road until the intersection was changed a blue moon ago.

My parents used to tell the story that the towns of Ishpeming and Negaunee were Indian names meaning Heaven and Hell. I don't remember which is which. Does anyone know if this is true? Or is this just a regional story told by non-residents?

Any recent sightings of moose on the Keweenaw, other than at Isle Royale, which legally is a part of Keweenaw County. How many are estimated to be in the Keweenaw?

From what I hear,and read, Negaunee means Lower Place.

We are heading to the Keweenaw next week and are hoping to see moose. How exciting to have a "Moose" spotting on Pasty Central today. Can't wait to join you all. The U.P. is my "Paradise" on earth!

My grandparents owned a vacation property near Paradise. When I was a child we lived in Detroit. Every summer the family would bypass Hell on the way to Paradise. We never saw moose in those days. It is nice to know they are back. Thanks for another great pasty cam picture!

It sure was nice to be able to see these moose. They actually stayed in the same spot for 20 minutes. They were about 30 feet from the road and I kept walking close to ensure that I would get somewhat of a close-up. I kept walking closer to the moose and they never moved, finally I had to stop or I would be in the water. The bigger of the two stood at least five and a half feet tall and looked to weigh around 600 pounds or more. The pictures do no justice, it is one of those things that you need to see for yourself. So to everyone hoping to find a moose, keep your eyes open when passing water or swampy areas.

Funny how you know you're in michigan when you have all four seasons in one day, and can go from Hell to Paradise in one day! (or sometimes Paradise to Hell...depending on your mood) :o)

Helltown is just accross the Montreal from Delaware. It was officially named Wyoming but since it was off mining company property, this suburb of Delaware was home to a variety of forbiden fruits such as saloons, gambling, and the occasional soiled dove. The local unofficial name was Helltown. The county used to have a rustic sign indicating where Helltown is but gave up trying to keep it in place since it was very popular as a dorm room or frathouse sign. Same problem with Schlitz Creek west of Eagle River - the sign wouldn't last very long. Helltown/Wyoming road is right after the Montreal River bridge on the Lac la Belle road to your right as you head towards Lac la Belle. There are/were a couple of cottages back there.

Moose are cool to look at...but you actually got out of your car to walk up to them? Count your blessings they weren't in rutting season...you may not have been able to get the picture in! Remember folks...these are nice to look at, but they are still WILD ANIMALS!

where is paradise located in the u.p.? i have only been to escanaba and dont really know so please tell me if u can.

Thanks for the Helltown info. I know that some summer in the 1960's I once saw that sign which is probably what aroused my curiosity in the first place. Come to think of it, I seem to remember seeing the Schlitz Creek sign in someone's Wadsworth Hall dorm room a long time ago too.

Moose are only aggressive when they have their young with them. Moose will only charge you if they feel threatned or if you come to close to their young. A bull moose can be a little more aggressive, but the chance of seeing one is slim. The bull moose stays deep in the woods and the best place to see a bull would be Isle Royale.

Rutting season is from September to late October.

Wonderful picture. I have not managed to see a moose on my last two visits to Isle Royale. Of course, one teeny contributing factor to that might be that this summer I found out how old I have become, and got a mega dose of recollection as to how difficult the hiking is out there. Combination of the two factors meant that I didn't make it anywhere near where the meeses were likely to be spotted. So glad to see that the reintroduction seems to be working in the UP

Yes, ME, moose are wild animals but they are no threat to humans and even during rutting season they wont hurt anyone unless like lyn said if you come near their young. they will fight with another moose but I dont recommend going up to one and trying to pet him (you would be crazy) some moose weigh up to 1600lbs. and could plow you over and really hurt u. imagine 1600lbs coming at you...ooooouuch!!!!!!!

Last spring we saw moose in about the same area, what time of day was this picture shot? We saw them in the evening and that night there were three of them the bull, the cow and the calf. The following morning as we left Paradise we saw them again in about the same area.

MY FRIEND AND I WERE UP AT COPPER HARBOR DOING SOME FISHING AND WE SAW 3 MOOSE IN THE SHALLOW WATER ON DEER LAKE. TOOK A PICTURE, BUT YOU CAN'T SEE THEM REAL WELL. FIRST MOOSE FOR ME.
BUT WE DID CATCH SOME PIKE, LARGEST WAS 36 IN. AND 10 1/2 LBS.

We live just a few miles west of Hell. And it was mighty warm down here today. But I was walking in the woods today and it was heavenly. Our daughter is home from MTU and it is great having her home. But I just Love every chance and excuse to come get up your way, moose or no moose.

It was around 2:30 and wish I would have seen a bull moose. What a nice shot that would have been.

Last September in Copper Harbor near the shoreline of Lily Lake I saw two moose, but I left my camera in the car!!! Another time I was on Cliff Drive and saw a beautiful black bear, but by the time I grabbed my camera he was long gone in the woods. This past weekend I hiked along the trails in the Estivant Pines and saw many fresh bear prints, but no bears to be found. Better have your camera ready at all times, because you never know when you may see one of the many beautiful animals here in the U.P.

Did anyone ever hear the tourist promotional-Before you go to Paradise Or Hell-Come to Mass?Does anyone know the names of the guys in the picture of the Mass City Band?

Many years ago a couple of us guys went to Hell. :o) Just after you turn off 41 to go to Lac La Belle, it's on the right side, around the corner. All we saw were foundations, I think. Hey, Toivo from Toivola, do you have a map of that intersection? Kiitos.

Another deviation from the picture of the moose which was outstanding and more on Helltown.
There is a book called "In the Sight of God" which was republished and edited by Helen Holman Smith and copyrighted in 1976 from an original publication in 1924. The book was published by the Denim Press in Dollar Day. The scene of the story is Helltown and was once banned from the C&H lirary. There is a neat map of the Keweenaw and Helltown location on the book cover. Paul from Illinois was right on as far as the location and I can remember my Dad taking me in there in the late 30's. Not much there then, I'm sure alot less now.

To John Carlson: Escanaba is on the Michigan side of the UP. Houghton/Hancock and the Keewenau is the west end of the Superior side. Paradise is on the east end of the Superior side south of Whitefish Point. If you look at the Pasty.net logo, the right-most finger on the keyboard points to Paradise.

This Pasty.com is the most addicting site on the internet. I have to check it every day to see what is next. I spent 3 years in Hancock going to nursing school and it was great despite the abundant snow. Most people who visit the Keweenaw don't see all there is to see if they stick to the main roads. There is so much more!!! I get this urge every summer to get there. Last summer we cruised the Portage to see the fireworks in Lake Linden. The next day we went to the parade in L.L. and then to Gay. Got to get back this summer!!!

H.C. Thanks for the info. about "Honk the Moose." I am looking for animal books and lighthouse books for my little friends while I am in MI. I called my local library to find out about reading level for this book, and they thought it was out of print. I e-mailed Trellis hoping I might be able to get it through them. Wish me luck, otherwise I will be shopping for other animal books for children. I'm sure I will have plenty to choose from no matter what.

Back around in 89 or 90,i was driving south from Dollar Bay,with my Southern Hillbilly women beside me.I'am a Northern hillbilly.All of a sudden she started ooh-ing & a aah-ing. I asked,"What's the matter"?She said,"I just saw Bullwinkle." We were south of the Van Riper State Park Campground, not long after sun-up.At the campground they have the head of a Moose in behind glass.Belive it may have been one of the 1st.to have had a tracking device put around it's neck.I have been around some mean Whitetail deer.Don't know why these big guys would be any different,in or out of the Rut.Belive the name wild animal, has some meaning to it.

Heed "Me's" word! I have seen a cow moose plow over a well-meaning tourist photographer when she got too close - and it was more than 40-50 feet!! Great shot, but I would consider yourself lucky if you got that close and did not get injured. C'mon folks, these ARE wild animals and can be unpredictable at ANY time. Just my .02!

You are correct that people should keep your distance, but the moose were near the road and my truck was 2 feet from me with the door open. I am not ignorant when it comes to taking precautions when dealing with wildlife. I have been around many WILD animals my whole life and know just how unpredictable they can be. But thanks for your advice and my uncle is also a wildlife biologist and has warned me all of the dangers.

Beautiful shot, I've lived in the Keweenaw for 13 years now and have yet to see one. My wife saw one near Michigammee her first trip up to da UP around 10 at night...before she knew what moose looked like. Her words were "You grow the biggest deer I've ever seen up here!" Well, maybe this summer will be my turn..

We saw a baby moose pulling weeds from the banks of the river at Seney national wildlife refuge on a canoe trip. It was awesome.

Concerning Helltown, my 92 year-old mother inlaw loaned me a somewhat dark novel by the name of "In the Sight of God", pub 1924, which is based mostly in Helltown around 1900. The author is Jacob Wendell Clark, and the book was recopyrighted in 1976 by Helen Holman Smith, Denim Press, Dollar Bay, MI

I find it as fascinating to mine history, as some do to mine gold, and have been investigating anything that can be found about Bete Grise and the nearby Mendota Mine. Many have been helpful in this research toward the writing of my novel.
