In the old days, U.P. towns and villages were represented by their own marching band or brass ensemble in holiday parades and celebrations. The C&H band from Calumet was one notable group, and the gents from Mass City another. They proudly appear in today's bonus "Shoebox Memory", courtesy of Chuck Voelker, our resident historian here at Pasty Central. Does anyone know about a band in Mohawk or a Nordstrom band? I seem to recall my grandmother talking about it.

I can't recall the names of any of the bands, but several local bands march in the Ontonagon Labor Day parade.

Where on Earth do you dig up these things?

There was a band called "The Keweenaw Band" under the direction of Wesley Williams of Ahmeek. A Nordstron played the trumpet, I believe. They played for most of the holidays and sounded very good. I even went to listen to them practice.

How about the Calumet High School ROTC Drum and Bugle Corp in the late 50's, they played in all the area parades and Ike's second term inaugural parade in DC, now they were good.

My late mother had a picture of the Nordstrom band from Mohawk.My Dad said that there were so many Nordstroms many years ago, that they started their own band.My father passed the picture on to a Nordstrom family member some years ago.

How about the Sad Sacks? I don't think they were a band-just a bunch from the Bucket.

who were the sad sacks.also what nordstoms played in the band.the copper country sure had some good parades.

My dad played the cornet, and when I looked at this picture, I wondered what the name of the band he played in...I never knew. He could have been one of these guys. I also noted that the only guy without a mustache was the cornet player. My dad was clean shaven too. We have a picture of him with his cornet under his arm.

Anyone remember the Mandan Hayseeds?

My grandfather Arthur Nordstrom along with a couple of his brothers Fred and Harold I think played in the Mohawk band as well as the C&h band which I understand played in many holiday celebrations at that time around the twenties and thirties.My grandfather lived in Mohawk where most of his family was born and raised.He and grandmother later moved to Copper City where they lived until death.I was a son of their oldest daughter Lula who married Ira Dowd and my family later spent many summer vacations in Copper City.One of Arthur Nordstrom's daughter's the youngest one named Dorothy is still alive and lives in Tucson,Arizona.She is now 80 years old and also used to live in Copper City for a few years after her and her husbands retirement.Great memories of Copper City remain in my mind.
