A few years back, CPH changed its name to Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center... and all of the area doctors offices moved into the clinic there, leaving this building vacant for a while. My most recent visit here was an informational meeting about the National Historical Park.

I'd be curious to know if any Camwatchers ever worked in this building during the Land Company/Mining days.

I am curious about a lake Ken? mentioned yesterday. Not the lake actually but its name. Lake Medora. Does anyone know where the word Medora comes from? I ask because I have a painting by a woman? named Medora Knapp and don't know anything about her.

Your question got me curious, so I went looking around. Towns and references are out there that refer to Medora, especially, Medora, SD. But it appears to indeed be a woman's name.

I am reading a book from the Mich.Historical Society with a secton on Fort Wilkins.It states that Lake Manganese was knows to the garrison as Lake Martha Stevenson,Mud Lake was Lake Clara Geisse and Lake of the Lillies was known as Lake Anna Stannard and Lake Fanny Hooe honored Daniel Ruggles sister in law who spent a summer with the garrison before returning to Detroit.No mention of Lake Medora.In the 1840's women visitors were scarce and they were held in esteem by informally naming a lake after them.It may be the same with Medora.The Michigan Tech Historical archives may have something on it.

My Dad had the corner office near that home shown in the picture. He worked as the sales manager for Calumet and Hecla. The home had guest rooms for visiting "officials". Dad would walk to/from work usually on Mine Street. And, he came home for lunch every day. That was when families usually ate 3 meals a day as a family.

As a young man, I remember going into the building from ground level on the Mine street side near the north end . The occation was payday.Every two weeks we had to go to pick up our checks after showing identfication I recall my mother picking up as many as 5 checks on some weeks when myself, brother, father, uncle, and neighbor were all at work or sleeping after having worked the night shift.

Does anyone know what has become of the Aggisie House? It looks like the right location for it, but sure does not look like the house I remember and spent so much time in.

The building was the main office of C&H. It held the administration offices. I enjoy checking into pasty.com most days. Keep up the good work.

Regarding Lake Medora,in the early 1900's I believe it was called Mosquito Lake . When and why {I think I know why} couldn't say .

Lake Medora was known as Mosquito Lake in the old days. When the name was changed, I don't know. Perhaps it was some early 20th Century spin doctor trying to improve the image. About the same time the name appears to have been changed, Keweenaw Copper Co. was operating the Medora Mine just east of Mandan. They may have been the source of the new name since they owned the land in that area. They were promoting the Keweenaw Central Railroad as the gateway to Keweenaw's wonderful recreational areas - Mosquito Lake - well, probably not a big seller!

I don't know when the name was changed from Mosquito Lake to Lake Medora, but my mother used to talk about picnics at Mosquito Lake in the 1930's and 40's, before the road was paved to Copper Harbor. The trek from Calumet to CH was a bit more of a trip in those days!

Lake Medora appears to be named after the Medora Mining Co., which was founded in 1848 according to this webpage:

I picked up the painting in Marquette, at a junktique shop in the seventies. It is a lovely lake scene. Hope everyone is having a good holiday.

Does anyone know who operates the Lift Bridge? I'm wondering how that works, since there appears to be so little activity.

The guys that operate the bridge are in the control room which is right under the south tower and above the roadway. It's probably MDOT that runs the bridge.

Any plans to erect a memorial for the hundreds of men killed as well as the thousands injured in the mines over the century or so that the mining companies took advantage of the environment as well as the people of the Keweenaw??? It would make sense that this be part of the "Union Bldg" project...

Does anyone know how I can begin extensive research on the history of Fanny Hooe, the person? We recently visited Copper Harbor and became entranced with the stories behind her visit, the possible disappearance and death, or just the plain "going back to Detroit" aspect.
