Second day in a row this has happened... I saw a great sunset, wished I could have photographed it, and the next day Scott Isaacson had emailed it to our Photo-box. Yesterday I spotted a giant eagle out our picture window down on the dunes, fumbled with the camera, but its batteries were dead.

Then I opened a series of email attachments from Donn de Yampert, and there was the very scene I had missed!

Wonder what I should visualize next?

On my recent visit to the Houghton/Hancock
area for MTU's graduation (my son graduated
from the computer science prgram with high
honors :-D) I was escorted by a huge bald
eagle along US-2. The bird swooped and
soared and flew along just above my trucks
passenger side for a bit before soaring out
over Lk. Michigan. Very Cool! It seemed to be
checking me and my vehicle out. Crazy! An
awesome bird for sure.

What luck to have the camera handy when you saw this! Great picture! I've been watching a webcam that is pointed at an eagle's nest in Wisconsin. The website is http://www.americaneagletv.com/ - its really neat because there is an eagle pair with an eaglet that is about 2 weeks old in the nest. Sometimes our local PBS station shows it between shows.

Why is the bridge positioned for travel on the upper deck and then for the lower deck?

By John, MI on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 12:45 pm:

If the traffic is using the lower deck, then the bridge doesn't have to open for the sailboats that have shorter masts.

I'm watching a website of an eagle's nest in Alaska.
http://home.gci.net/~bluffcam/
The eaglets hatched yesterday! How strong and powerful yet gentle with their young.
There is also a website of a nest in Washington that is accessed through the Alaska website.

Visualize whirled peas.

Thank you DdY and Charlie for these great shots. Have tried in vain to photo one of these birds in the Copper Country seems like forever. Thank you, also, ShawnR and CN for your Eagle nest cam links. Way cool!!

Thanks John, MI, I should have known, I've just never seen anything going under the bridge yet. I'm more familiar with the Iron Mt/Quinnesec/Norway area that my parents are from.

Leaving Copper Harbor last year a eagle flew with
the car along Great Sand Bay....saying goodbye to us for the year.....I love the UP!!!!!

I bet those big birds are kettling on Brockway today. It's just a perfect day for them to play!

By KM on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 05:25 pm:

Trying to go smelting a couple of weeks ago next to Pilgrim River, there were 2 bald eagles, just sitting in the trees, perched. GORGEOUS....I wished that I had my camera for that moment.

By YooperFinn MI on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 05:59 pm:

Fantastic photographs! I think that from now on I'm going to take the camera with me whenever I leave the house. You just never know when an opportunity like this will occur! The eagle in flight over the water is my wallpaper for the week!

Visualize WHIRLED PEAS.

Beautiful shots as usual.

Ever wonder why on some flags the eagle icon is depicted with two heads?
One talon clutches the olive branch and the other talon clutches a quiver of arrows.
Western History in a nutshell: There can be no peace unless freedom-loving places maintain the highest arts of war for their defense.

I remember the stretch of 41 near Amasa as always being a good area to spot an Eagle. Also any of the lakes and rivers around that area.

By Heidi, Illinois on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 11:51 am:

Simply unbelievable, I am going up there this weekend (Memorial Day w/e 2002) and I surely hope I see an eagle up there.
That bird is truly beautiful.

Fantastic views of our Nation's Bird! I always try to keep my camera handy too, but haven't gotten a view as great as those of the Eagle!
Keep up the good work!

In response to Ladyyoop(Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 04:30 pm:), I managed to get a photo of those flying birds on Brockway Mountain during our recent vacation to the UP on May 7th. My husband thought they were Red Beaked Buzzards, is this correct?

On Brockway

Turkey vultures, aka buzzards, aka Cathartes aura.
