I didn't even wear a coat yesterday when I left the house. Big mistake. As the morning unfolded, the rain became snow and the snow became slush. Driving between Houghton and Calumet, US-41 was very difficult.

Apparently not much accumulation over by Ontonagon, where Dan Urbanski spotted the pair waiting for the bus. The second shot actually wasn't taken yesterday, though it perfectly depicts the way it looked in much of the region. Nancy Nelson sent us this one back around Easter. I thought we had seen the last of these conditions until about next November.

Do you recognize the locale of the second shot? Maybe we'll have to ask Toivo to show us a map.

It's the church in Covington, right?

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 07:50 am:

Or Painesdale?

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 07:51 am:

I like the German Shorthaired Pointer. Great dogs, they are.

By Rich Midland, MI on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 08:07 am:

I'm with "CML", it's Covington, eh?

By Patti on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 09:13 am:

Phoenix Church? Outside Eagle River?

By Patt - Howell, MI on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 09:40 am:

Tell me about it! Tuesday was a nice day. Great view of the Portage from my motel room at the College Motel, which by the way I highly reccommend to any downstaters who may think it is less than nice from the outside appearances. Not so on the inside. Anyways what a surprise yesterday morning to see Mt. Ripley covered with snow again! Made for an interesting day too. Fighting snow flakes the size of golf balls while trekking to & from the dorm room to my car with "stuff" then trying to dodge stinging hail along with it!. The trip downstate it was crummy all the way to the Bridge. Amazing how just crossing the bridge brought blue skies & warmer temps but of course downstate is not nearly as beautiful as the UP. Will miss the UP and look forward to the trek back up there in mid-August. Again thanks Pasty Cam this sight is great!

Side note from beancounter to the HP connection.
I see you not only lurk on our HP forum but here too! LOL Also rest assured not too many snacks were taken. And all were healthy snacks like grapes, carrots etc been working too hard on this weight loss thing to blow it now.

By John, Chicago on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 10:07 am:

I agree that it's the church in Covington, the giveaway is the railroad crossing sign!

By Steve Way West of Chicago on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 10:16 am:

Covington it is! "John, Chicago" hits the nail on the head, there's no train (in 2002) that crosses the highway in Phoenix! What great pictures!

By Yooper in Indiana on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 10:16 am:

Not at Pheonix, no house next to it. Looks like to me it is along 141,,in Covington.

By Liz Benson, Idaho on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 11:14 am:

Dan created a living picture of one of my favorite Hummel figurines!

By Mike - Redford, Mi. on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 01:11 pm:

Yah, that German Pointer in that picture looks like he'd rather be somewhere else (like inside)
Nice dog!!

By Marie, Oklahoma on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 08:09 pm:

That is the Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington; my grandfather Elias Nopola was one of the original charter members. When Bethany church joined Soumi Synod in 1907, Grandpa decided with others to join the Finnish National Church and they built another church, Trinity Lutheran. The first services at Bethany were held 10/20/08. The steeple was added to the building in 1913, built by Victor Ikkela. In 1932 the impressive triptych painting, The Last Supper, by T.J.Johnson was installed on the alter at Christmas services. Professor Elmer Forsberg of the Chicago Art Institute was instrumental in obtaining this beautiful piece of art from CAI where the painting had hung.

misspelled altar--sorry

By Mark From Kaleva, Michigan on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 09:34 pm:

Looks like Covington to me too! There is not a house next to the church in Phoenix

By Toivo from Toivola on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 09:34 pm:

OK, OK, - I been out makin' wood all day and didn't know the Camwatchers needed a map. (Me and Eino want to fill the shed before the black flies notice us.)

Sure enough, like John from Chicago said, there's the train tracks:

Covington area

Doug, Wixom, MI on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 10:53 pm:

I love it. Out makin wood. And smart too, before them pesky michigan state birds are out. Good night now, I've had by daily dose of da Pasty Cam.

By Beverly, Mississippi on Thursday, May 9, 2002 - 11:42 pm:

Well, I don't know which picture I like best, the Hummel-esque or the, humm, what is the other one? a Currier and Ives? But the discussions and guesses are what really made my day. Ya'll go on to bed now, its quarter til midnight (still got another hour here in Mississippi). Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite.

By Roger Kangas, U.P. on Friday, May 10, 2002 - 07:22 am:

This photo was taken same day as those above.

From bike riding/soccer one day, to snowmen the next! It's Copper County weather!

Spring Sprunging

By JAS - Chassell on Friday, May 10, 2002 - 08:31 am:

To Marie - Oklahoma: You misspelled "Suomi". (That is my maiden name.)

By Clara, TX on Friday, May 10, 2002 - 03:57 pm:

The Spring Storm picture is definitely a winner! It almost looks like a Norman Rockwell. It should be entered into a contest.

By Marie, Ok. on Saturday, May 11, 2002 - 12:31 am:

Sorry JAS about misspelling Suomi, I should have gone to bed instead of trying to type...;) maybe use spell check....proofreading works too..oh ja Nancy, I forgot to say I loved the pic of my hometown!

By Rebecca Pennala, Howell on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 12:36 pm:

Roger - what a cute picture! Downstate, the cousins have put the mittens, boots and snow shovels away and snow is a long ago memory by now!
Say hello to your family.

By Pam, OH on Friday, May 17, 2002 - 08:23 pm:

A beautiful picture of the snow and church! And I also like the picture of the German Shorthair. They are great dogs -- we have our third one now!

By Nick, Chicago on Friday, October 3, 2003 - 02:12 am:

Gosh I love Covington. My family owns the two houses directly to the West of the Church. Can't wait to get up there for some snowmobiling this winter. Oh, and don't forget the PAC fishing derby the 1st weekend in January. Hope to see y'all there!!

By Donnie & Marie Virginia on Saturday, March 6, 2004 - 04:49 pm:

This is the Church that Marie and I were married in 40 years ago on June 20th, 1964!
