By Patt - Howell on Monday, May 6, 2002 - 12:52 pm:

Leaving in a few hours for the UP to bring my son back down state for the summer as this is the last week at Tech. Thank you Pasty Cam for all the joyful, funny & beautiful photos you have shared this year. It made the "empty nest" adjustment easier. And though my son will be home for 3 short months I plan to continue to visit you daily for my fix of Northern beauty. Meanwhile it is time to load the car up with snacks for the long trip (almost 600 miles).

I would like to see a picture of Trailing Arbutus also. My aunt used to wear that perfume and I never knew what the plant looked like.

Good news, you can order a whole book full of wildflowers at Pasty Central. There are 64 beautiful full color pictures of "Wildflowers and Other Colorful Inhabitants of the North Woods" in this book. Follow the link to order online. This is a picture straight from the book of a Trailing Arbutus. Pasty Softwear- Click on the Books link.

Thank you for the info on the Trailing Arbutus! And to find out there is a perfume too.I would love to get downwind of it.Any Avon Ladies know if they would have it? Remember the Fuller Brush man? What happen to him?

By Ken from da UP on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 - 12:32 am:

I remember the Fuller Brush man would come to our house in Paavola every so often. Also the Watkins deliveryman. And the Jewel Tea man. Remember those guys? You're right, RCW. It is beautimous. Thank you, Steve. And Charlie.

I remember going down to the Eagle Harbor cemetary with my grandparents in the spring to rake and the ground being covered with arbutus. It was so beautiful and I don't think you ever forget the smell!

By Melodie, Ohio on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 - 09:47 am:

Oh, yes, the smell of arbutus I will never forget. My dad picked it at Spread Eagle,WI, when I was a kid and it was legal. :-)

What would an ill Yooper be without Watkins sauve spread in your nose or on your chest. It's a smell that you never forget.

By R Somero CA on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 - 09:41 pm:

I was a Jewel Tea man for a short time in 1972. Filled in for Jim Perko when he was on vacation. Anyone else remember?

By Candy, CA on Wednesday, May 8, 2002 - 12:41 am:

Thank you, Daryl, for a glimpse of my favorite part of the Keweenaw spring. There are wonderful patches of arbutus on the snowmobile trail off of Old County Road behind Laurium that seem heaven-sent after all the months of winter. Here in California, arbutus is a kind of tree, and you can't find anything that looks or smells like ours. While I sure didn't miss the snow (and won't miss the mosquitos and black flies), I do miss the greening of the Yoop. It's a wonder to behold, driving down White Street in Hancock and seeing leaves pop out overnight.

By Y from Hancock, Mi on Wednesday, May 8, 2002 - 08:39 am:

Yes, I remember the Jewel Tea. Jim Perko came to my house in the 70's as the sales person. Maybe you did too R. Somero.
