Last Winter Scene of the season?    ...scroll down to share comments

There comes a time in April or May each year when a sudden transformation takes place. This morning when I looked out the window of our home here in Eagle River, the snowbanks had disappeared overnight. A warm rain and south wind has kicked the Spring thaw into high gear. (By the way, it's good to be home... still getting over jet lag from the Alaska trip).

Last week Kelly Wenberg sent this lovely follow-up shot to her Tobacco River photo of April 2nd. I'm sure if we stood at the end of the Houghton Canal for this morning's sunrise, it would be quite a different scene. Perhaps today's will be the last true winter picture of the 2001-2002 season.

This photo is at the upper entrance of the Portage Canal (next to McLain State Park), yes?

Nice picture Kelly. Picture was taken from the Houghton side of the canal looking toward the park and light house I believe. Great work, Kelly. RJW

Great shot! I remember diving off of that beacon structure when we were in High School. That is until the U.S. Coast Gaurd would come out and kick us off. Of course the Coast Gaurd was from Hancock and Houghton and we were only from Calumet. They were the BIG city boys and we were the country bumpkins.

Very nice photo, Kelly. Taking the calender idea one more step, why not do a Pasty Cam calender?
This is a great site of those of us "down below" to see what is happening in the Copper Country.

Calendar is already available. Check with Charlie to see if there are any left.

Thanks. Another heartbreakingly beautiful scene. It reminds me that when you have a real winter, you treasure the spring that much more.

Paul from El Paso -

We still have just a few of the 2002 Pasty Cam Calendars left. They are available with pasty orders, or just email me if you want one without pasties. This is our third year having a color calendar, an it gets better every time.

Kelly, when I move back to the land of concrete and steel structure, this is what I'll be missing most. You'll have to keep sending me these, so I never forget. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

memorable location for me. Last time I talked to my dad was at this spot. We drove up here on the Oskar route and got out , walked around and had a long talk. There was a small park off to the left that had run down. I understand it has since been returned to a usable condition. Used to swim here too. Tried swimming there as an adult, but God ! is that water cold. Great picture.

By Lin SE lower MI on Wednesday, May 1, 2002 - 09:27 pm:

We all swam here as kids. Was disappointed to see it all roped off last time I was there, a few years back. Can anyone tell me why?
