You are welcome to add to this memorial tribute:

Raymond Pomroy
J. Joanne Kilpela
Robert L. McGrath
Marian Wick
Joseph Sayen
Elizabeth Bowes Lyon

A couple of personal notes... One of this month's honorees was a lovely person we met by way of this website, a lady who lived in a retirement center downstate and was inspired by the activity of the residents at Still Waters. Marian Wick, aged 86, was a resident of Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids. In her last note to us she mentioned, "I used to make 25 pasties at a time". We were sending a half dozen to her on the day she passed away (3/25).

To our friends in Great Britain we send condolences on the passing of the Queen Mother. The heritage of the Upper Peninsula includes a strong bond with the UK, and we celebrate the memory of one of their notable leaders.

Thanks to Jeffery Meagher for the breathtaking sunset at McLain State Park.

By Mary Schei, Florida on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 - 11:43 am:

In memory of my husband, Marty Tarbox, his much too short life ended 8 years ago on the first day of spring. It's ironic that spring, with it's promise of new life, will always be associated with his passing for me. He was a wonderful man and is still missed by many.

By Randall Laakko on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 - 03:27 pm:

In loving memory of Michael Sulo Laakko born in 1914 in Paynesville, MI, died March 12, 2002, in CLearwater, FL. He lived in Mass as a young boy and grew up in Fulton before moving to Detroit during the depression. Dad loved the Keweenaw, and so do I.

By Catherine, Holland, MI on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 - 06:19 pm:

I met Marian Wick at a St Urho's dance sponsored by the West MI Finnish American Society a few years ago. Quite a lady.

By Martha L., Mishawaka, IN on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 - 11:40 pm:

I'd like to add my father, William Howard Bergh, a lifelong native of Keweenaw County (Bete Grise from birth on 11/23/13 to 1923 and then Copper Harbor from 1923-1999). He loved the Keweenaw Peninsula so much. He passed away three years ago on March 28, 1999 (Palm Sunday). Just as Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, daddy made his entry into Heaven. He suffered so much his last month of life that we would never ask him to come back to us even though there is still a terrible empty space at the table and his passing still hurts so horribly. We are so thankful that we KNOW that his heart was right with the Lord and that he is now in the presence of Jesus. What a blessing daddy was to our family and what a great Godly heritage he left my sister and I.

I would like to add my friend JoAnn L Palmer whose beauty and grace will always be remembered but it was her inner beauty that endeared her to all who knew her. Like too many other young women, she died this month fighting breast cancer in the prime of her life. Surely with all we can accomplish today, we can soon find a cure to this horrible disease.

By Joyce waterford mi. on Sunday, April 21, 2002 - 07:45 pm:

In Memory of my mother Eunice Cline who passed away last july 24th. She was a wonderful mother and friend and is missed very much. Born in Lake Linden on the Bootjack road. Spent summers there as long as possible. I'm sure where ever her spot in heaven is, she can always remember the beauty of the very beautiful north country, where she was raised. Thank you for these lovely pictures.

By Kathy, home state MI, state of residence TN on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 - 11:50 pm:

In memory of my father, Byron Baker (5/12/1912 - 4/21/1973), who showed me the beauty of Michigan, taught me the importance of connecting to your surroundings and the reason I have come to love Nature almost as much as he did.

By Brenda, Los Angeles on Saturday, May 25, 2002 - 12:27 am:

In loving memory of my mom, Barbara Tuovila-Armes, who showed me the quiet beauty of the UP and the honor of being a Finn. Also in loving memory of my mother-in-law, Donna Shell, who could not take my mom's place but did the best she could. She died this Good Friday, four days after the 10th anniversary of my mom's death.
