Living here on the edge of the Big Lake provides some unique experiences. The final thing I saw before falling into bed last night, and then again this morning (second only to the moonlight which awoke me) was the familiar glow of lights on the horizon, the freighters returning for a new season. It brought to mind this shot by Jon Anderson we featured a few years back, before our traditional "Wallpaper of the Week" appeared. A fitting retro-fit for this week's WOW.

The early morning glow brought a little Déjà Vu, again marveling at the Keweenaw Moon.

Wow, spectacular! Can I come?

By me on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 04:37 pm:

That freighter picture is eerie...that ship almost looks like it's levitating....kinda creepy, but very cool!

By M. Maatta LL MI on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 07:26 pm:

Anyone care to read a great fast moving book that brings the importance of the shipping season and how glorious it was when it began every year again in the Keweenaw??? Then look for the Henry Hobart journal. As stated it is fast moving because it is in journal format. The man was a school teacher when the Cliff mine was operating. It is a great little collection of readings that will take you back to living in Central Location at that time battling the elements, mourning the losses and waiting for spring. A must read for any yooper or yooper wanna be!

By me too on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 07:39 pm:

is it just me or does it seem this ship is riding empty? anyone know?

By RCW $ Bay on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 08:33 pm:

Sure is looking like an empty trip , or maybe a load of sailboat fuel.

By Melissa, Houghton, MI on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 08:42 pm:

The ship in the picture is the Canada Steamship Lines "Frontenac," which arrived in Duluth early Sunday morning, to load taconite. Was the first arrival of the new season, and sports a brand new coat of paint. Should not be riding empty on the downbound trip, but may not have a full load. Who knows? I really miss hearing the fog horn in Eagle Harbor on foggy days or nights to warn the frieghters of shore. I think that once you get the lake in your viens you never lose it.

By mike,tx on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 10:24 pm:

Its great watching the Freighters stroll over the Big Blue Gem...Use to watch them come into Marquette some years back. Neat photo!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 11:14 pm:

Molson -

If you want to hear a foghorn and the sounds of the Lake, check out a preview of a new website coming soon: Keweenaw Lighthouse Celebration.

It promises to be an interesting an informative place about Lighthouses in the region, and tours which will be available. It's a project of a group working with the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, and it's hosted through the service grant program here at PastyNET/Pasty Central.

By Robin, MI on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 01:49 am:

I've been searching for years for a recording of a foghorn to give my Dad. We used to listen to it in Grand Marais on those mystique foggy days. I would greatly appreciate any help any of you could give.

That's the Algosoo in the picture yesterday;it seems closer than normal to shore;perhaps anchored, and yes it's empty. It's currently in the drydock at the shipyard up in Thunder Bay.Don't forget to check out http://www.boatnerd.com (including the Information Search page(and the chat rooms as well;also look at the links page-look at the Soo Locks Live Webcams to see what's going through the locks.) By me too, again! on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 08:54 am:

both of those sites suggested are great sites for shipping stuff...but now I am confused which vessel is it? what would one suggest to find out? this is now a great passtime for me...identify the ship in passing :)

By Pete on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 10:15 am:

That is most definitely the Algosoo. When exactly was the picture taken?

By YooperFinn MI on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 12:55 pm:

Pete, The pic here of the Algosoo was featured in March 1999. Great picture, isn't it!

By Becky Lansing MI on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 09:12 am:

Hey Naomi!! How strange, I grew up in East Lansing/Lansing, still live in Lansing, but we just bought a house in Tamarack. Couldn't stand to just visit anymore-had to put down some roots too.

By Alice, CA on Friday, March 29, 2002 - 02:20 am:

Charlie-Checked out that Keweenaw Lighthouse Celebration site. Neat! Thanks.

By dt on Friday, March 29, 2002 - 10:25 pm:

Thanks so much for the gorgeous picture. My husband and I look forward to our fall vacations when we can get up to the Soo and see the freighters. We have to live vicariously until then checking all the websites we can to see all those magnificent boats. We hope to get back to Copper Harbor and the surrounding area. I guess you could say we are Yooper wanna be's. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful country with the rest of us!!

After living in Duluth for almost 15 years, I spent alot of time at canal park watching these ships come and go. It was especially fascinating to watch the 1000 footers maneuver thru the canal. What a magnificent body of water Lake Superior is and now being away from Lake Linden and the lake I sure miss it. Minneapolis just doesn't cut it for me .. give me the Copper Country any day !!
