Quincy # 7 Rockpile?

By BS on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 07:58 am:

The Quincy "mine tour" tracks on the hillside, I think.

By melissa, lansing, MI on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 08:02 am:

My guess is the Quincy Mine tram tracks.

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 08:37 am:

Hi Mike - Redford. Maybe dey are standing at da mine hoist at Quincy.

By Moron Boy on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 08:38 am:

It could be the lookout on Quincy hill.

By will on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 08:56 am:

from the stepg of the houghton county court house

By Charlie H., at Quincy Mine on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 09:38 am:

O.K., O.K., I didn't have a chance to add a message after uploading this shot.

Not the courthouse (wrong side),
Not the scenic lookout,
Not the steam hoist building,
Not the tram tracks,
Not the rockpile,
Not Kowsit Lats.

The picture above is the southern facing view from the top window of the Quincy Mine shafthouse. What an adventure to climb all those ancient steps to the very top of this historic structure! Accompanied by Ed Yarbrough, the Mine Hoist Association's manager, I snapped this picture standing on a plank platform under the window facing Houghton. Then I jumped over to the window toward Chassell-Baraga and beyond, then carefully edged along the railings around those huge gears above the hoist bearings and cautiously climbed onto the platform just inside the north facing window.

To my astonishment, I could see the tanks on Swedetown Hill way up in Calumet 9 miles away! AND all the way up to Mount Bohemia!! The miners who worked high up in this building must have had the nearest thing to an "aerial view" before the days of airplanes.

You know, my preoccupation with the magnificent sight out the windows totally distracted me from taking any shots inside the shafthouse.

Guess I'll just have to go back.

I hope you snapped shots from your other views. And that you'll post them too.

By Becky, Lansing MI on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 10:29 am:

Ditto! Is that still ice on the parking lot?

By Dave, Dearborn MI on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 10:43 am:

I have been to the quincy a number of times and al I can say is "WOW". This would be a perfect Wallpaper Of the Week. If not, how can I get a copy in 1024x768? Thanks

What a great shot. I can see our old house if I look closely. I know I've never seen this angle before. Nice work, Charlie.

By Paul, Houghton County on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 11:28 am:

Great photo! I've often wondered what the view from the mine shaft windows would be like. Thanks alot for sharing, and I sure do hope you'll post the other views as well.

Great photo and I can just imagine the thrill and climb.

By patron, Vancouver WA on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 02:48 pm:

When I first saw this picture, I thought it was the scenic outlook on Quincy Hill. Back in the late 50's, my husband-to-be and me used to go there to "watch the submarine races". Brings back a lot of wonderful memories. Thanks again Charlie, for jolting the memory banks.

By NancyNelson, WI on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 05:51 pm:

Glad there are a few nutz in the world to bring us great shots like that. Wouldn't catch me up there for all the pasties in the Yoop! Another plea for the other views, PLEASE.

By Catherine, Holland MI on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 08:14 pm:

Happy belated birthday and thanks for all of your good work, Charlie!

Today would have been Ruth Ristola's 64th birthday.

To Tater, Paul, Nancy, and all who wanted other views -

The Kodak DC260 I took along really didn't do justice to the incredible panorama in every direction. Here's a view looking north, and I've uploaded a bigger version so you can scroll around and see more detail. Warning: it's a big file (161k) so may take a while to load. Look at the shot below and then click here for the larger one.

By Russ E. St. Clair county MI on Thursday, March 21, 2002 - 01:43 am:

Well I saw almost this view everyday when I was a boy! (the old bridge was there then) Our house was just a few hundred feet from the mine shaft! (See Feb./08/02 "Quincy Mine Sunrise" comments). Was in all the buildings then but was too scared to go up in the shaft house. (Still wouldn't get me up there!) My guess would have been the tracks on the hillside or thereabouts. Great View!

Reminds me of the View from the old Kingston Mine Shaft House in Copper City. Went up there just 8 years ago with my kids.....

Whoever the slug is who dynamited that Shaft House should be ashamed of himself. Was one of the best views on the Peninsula.

By Erich Weber, Mi. & Fla. on Saturday, March 23, 2002 - 01:15 pm:

Great photos, almost wish I were there but, think I'll wait till it gets a little warmer.
