O.K., O.K., I didn't have a chance to add a message after uploading this shot.
Not the courthouse (wrong side),
Not the scenic lookout,
Not the steam hoist building,
Not the tram tracks,
Not the rockpile,
Not Kowsit Lats.
The picture above is the southern facing view from the top window of the Quincy Mine shafthouse. What an adventure to climb all those ancient steps to the very top of this historic structure! Accompanied by Ed Yarbrough, the Mine Hoist Association's manager, I snapped this picture standing on a plank platform under the window facing Houghton. Then I jumped over to the window toward Chassell-Baraga and beyond, then carefully edged along the railings around those huge gears above the hoist bearings and cautiously climbed onto the platform just inside the north facing window.
To my astonishment, I could see the tanks on Swedetown Hill way up in Calumet 9 miles away! AND all the way up to Mount Bohemia!! The miners who worked high up in this building must have had the nearest thing to an "aerial view" before the days of airplanes.
You know, my preoccupation with the magnificent sight out the windows totally distracted me from taking any shots inside the shafthouse.
Guess I'll just have to go back.
