Saturday night was incredibly cold. Mainly because the heat was sucked right out of our house here on the shore of Lake Superior, with sustained winds of 45-60 mph. It had been quite warm and rainy during the day, and the runoff from the roof was flapping in the breeze as temperatures began to fall. The top photo is looking up from behind the house, and the lake view is from another window on the upper floor.

It's like the old cartoons where the splashing bucket freezes in mid-air.

The winds were especially fierce in the eastern U.P. yesterday. Quite a few MTU students returning from Spring Break were stranded in St. Ignace and Newberry, as State Police closed stretches of US-2 and M-28 (the "Seney Stretch").

Does that bring back any memories for some of our Tech Alumni?

Please tell us if the Big mac Bridge was closed on the week end and for how long. We cancelled a trip to the U.P. due to the fierce weather, and would appreciate knowing info. about the bridge. Thank you The Hall's

A friend of mine crashed with me here yesterday because it was too treacherous to drive back. Blizzard warnings at the bridge, although I'm not sure it was closed, and lots of closed roads would have made travel very difficult. Oh, the memories.......(seems like it happened most every break!)

The Mackinac bridge was closed to just about everything other than passenger vehicles on Saturday & Sunday. You can check bridge conditions at http://www.mackinacbridge.org/index.html
My daughter (freshman at Tech) was stranded in Mackinac City last night due to the road closures in the U.P.

Our TV station had info on the bridge also. It was closed from 7PM Saturday 'til 2PM Sunday.

A snow emergency remains in effect this morning for Chippewa County, although main roads are now open. Crews have been working all night to clear abandoned cars and trucks from the roads. I-75 and US-2 reopened at about 12:45 this morning after being closed from North of the Mackinac Bridge to Sault Ste.

Yes that was me! Stayed the night in Mackinac City. What a trip!

By sk, michigan on Monday, March 11, 2002 - 08:29 pm:

Hope all the students made it back safely. Mine fortunately left Thursday and saved us a lot of worrying. Maybe by Tech graduation in May this crazy weather will be just a memory.

These pictures makes my bones ache just looking at them. I must say I will take my chances with our earthquakes and occassional high waters(floods).Youppers are really a hearty lot!!!

Did anyone see the beautimous 'sun-dogs' Sunday morning? (yesterday) There was much fine ice crystals in the air from all the snow and wind. I guess the refraction is the same as for the rainbows. Really pretty!
