Though the photo is a bit pixellated and worn, this gives you the idea of what it was like earlier in the last century, finding a path through the ice.

Now that we get to have a closer look, I wonder if this really is the Ranger II? It's hard to make out the name. Any Cam-watching nautical experts out there?

Charley,

Bob Wetton told me that you had some doubt if this weeks photo was in fact Ranger II. I can verify that it is since I worked at Isle Royale back in the 60's when it was still inuse.

A while back I sent you a picture of a picture of the Ranger II doing its job in Houghton. Compare them--looks like this one is in fact the one.

Nancy,

Interesting reference book. Is it an encyclopedia?

Charlie,
It sure looks like it says Ranger 2 to me. Although the upper photo doesn't say National Park Service, 'course that could have been added later. Is that one taken at Isle Royale? The one with the Buick looks like the Cahodas/Paoli dock in Houghton. Went aboard the South American couple times here as a kid, for their 'open house.' Bob, what did I do with that picture of Ranger 2 that you sent me? :o) But I'll keep looking.

Charlie'
That is a picture of part of one of the displays in the museum that has been created inside the old Rock Harbor lighthouse on Isle Royale.

Wished I could come up with the picture partially shown next to the Ranger. My dad used that boat in the early fifties when he was a park ranger at Amygdaloid Island. My brothers and I used to play in the old fishing boat in the background.
