Pasty Central comes to you each day from Still Waters, a modern and comfortable Home for the Elderly in Calumet, Michigan. As I was driving from Still Waters one snowy morning this week, the flag at Peterson's Funeral Home caught my eye - fluttering above a wind-swept snowbank, with a backdrop of the giant smokestack next to the Calumet High School.

Pausing in the brilliant sunshine to click the Pasty Cam, I realized that the fabric of my life has become woven with all of sorts of landmarks: Still Waters, Calumet High, the old mining buildings, snowbanks, Lake Superior, Brockway Mountain Drive, the Lift Bridge, Quincy, MTU, Finlandia, Bete Grise, Copper Harbor... on and on. What a priveledge these past four years to bring to these pages a glimpse of life in the U.P., a place I feel very much at home.

But that waving flag brings to mind some other folks who are away from home, perhaps this very moment dodging bullets, on a mission to prevent the horror of last September 11 from ever happening again. Our prayers are with those service men and women - for their safe return - and wisdom for America's leadership in these difficult days.

Now this is the winter weather I remember in the Copper Country. What a great picture. Very appropriate for the times. Thank you Charlie for your beautiful pictures and thoughtful words.

Very evocative image, Charlie. That's the fluted stack of the former Hecla Engine House in the background(for a different perspective on this beautiful structure see pic posted below).
Close by, in old photos of Calumet, you can see it's twin(or big brother) rising nearly twice as tall: the Superior Stack, another standard bearer from days now gone but not forgotten.
Godspeed to all those in harm's way.

I was happy to see our flag flying high. Let us always fly our flag high and with pride, and let us pray that our country will always be as free as the wind that is blowing that flag. Patron of Vancouver WA, what part of the CC are you from. I'm from near Houghton.

Ernie BG,WA...I'm from Baltic, My husband went to Michigan Tech in Houghton. Don't these pictures make you lonesome for that area? We're very grateful to Pasty Central for giving us this daily look at one of the most beautiful places in the country.

great picture, reminds me of the importance of parking your car by some sort of landmark so it can be located in the morning. (or July)

This is a great picture. I love all the beautiful sights you bring us each day. Many of them become my wallpaper, this one for sure. God Bless America, this reminds us what America is... It is our home where we have our best memories. Thanks again for the pictures...As an Air Force veteran myself I feel deeply for our country and I want to thank all the service men and women who have served and are serving to keep our "snowbanks" free...
