Known as the "Strawberry Capitol of the North Country", Chassell is kind of the 'east gate' of the Copper Country.

Any of our regular Cam-watchers from Chassell?

By Svea, San Diego, CA on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 - 03:46 am:

I was born in Chassell, more years ago than I care to admit! What fun to find this photo. I never knew Chassell is the "strawberry capitol" of the UP. Maybe that's why I love strawberries.

By Kerry J, Mich on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 - 05:57 am:

Well my parents have a place in Chassell just north of town on US-41. I like going up there during the summer and the winter time. I get a chance to get away from city life an enjoy the country setting for awhile. But when I retire from work in 33 yrs I'll be staying up there, to go fishing, and all the other activities.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THOSE PANTHERS BACK IN THE 50'S? WHAT A BASKETBALL DYNASTY! ANY PLAYERS FROM THAT ERA?

By Mike - Redford, MI on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 - 06:58 am:

I was also born and raised here in the Chassell area. I lived about 5 miles south of town, off of US-41, near the Portage Entry Road. I attended the schools there up to '84 when my family moved to lower Michigan.
I picked alot of strawberries at a nearby farm that probably were sold at the festival. I still remember the sore back and the wet pants of long days of picking out in the fields.
I also remember seeing the trophys for the 50's basketball team in the Community Center display while being there for gym class.
Go Panthers!!

I just want you to know that my husband loves the UP of Michigan. My dad was born in Chassell and he has brothers that are still there, the Nerg's. We enjoy visiting Chassell and the vicinity when we are in Michigan vacationing with my mom in Cheboygan.
SAY YAH TO THE UP, EH!!! SISU!!

Everyone would like to be from Chassell!!! It's a great little town. My Mom was born in Chassell and now three of my siblings have returned to live in Chassell. Wish I were one of them!! There is NOTHING like strawberry shortcake during the Festival in July, at Chassell beach, unless, of course, it's the chicken!

I'll be moving back to Chassell permanently either this fall or in the spring of next year. My father's family still lives there on the Sturgeon River Road. What a wonderful picture for my desktop! I'll be sure to send it to my brother Gary and sister Karen. I CAN'T WAIT TO BE BACK IN THE U.P.!

I was born & raised in Chassell & left there in the mid 50's. Still think of it as my home and will forever. Picked strawberrys for Frank Jarvi many summers. Played basketball at the community center with some of those great players that later made basketball history for our great State. Thanks for the great photo and for putting Chassell on the map again.

My favorite memory of Chassell is the lunch stop we always made at the Chippewa Restaurant! They had hot turkey sandwiches made with real turkey meat not that deli stuff! Unfortunately the restaurant burned a few years ago. Does anyone know if they will ever rebuild it?

By Martha L., Mishawaka, IN on Thursday, March 7, 2002 - 10:21 pm:

I've been wondering about the Chippewa Restaurant also. I grew up in Copper Harbor and remember as a young kid coming back from a visit at my grandma's house in the thumb area of lower Mich. in a blinding snowstorm. We got to Chassel about 7:00 p.m. My mom was eshausted from the tedious driving and we stopped for supper there at the Chippewa. Even at that young age, I remember how nice the people were. We were able to call my dad in Copper Harbor and let him know where we were and when to expect us. I hope that the owners are able to rebuild the restaurant real soon! I'll be driving past it again in May on my way up to Copper Harbor for the summer! Can hardly wait!!

By LB, SE lower MI on Friday, March 8, 2002 - 05:45 pm:

Anyone know that one guy, Alan Hackman there? He's kin and ma was wonderin what he's up to these days! Strawberries time in the yoop. Hmmmmm. Nothin better!

By Larry - Howell, Mi. on Saturday, March 9, 2002 - 10:19 am:

Jack, id I think the Michaelson boys played basketball at the Doelle School in Tapiola. That was in the early to mid 50's. Maybe not!!

By Shirley - Kingman, AZ on Sunday, March 10, 2002 - 02:48 pm:

I lived in Chassell when they won the Basketball Championships. What a time that was. The excitment and all. My children picked strawberries for Frank Jarvi and Henry Ohtonen. The strawberries in Chassell are the best, I have never tasted better. Wish we had some right now. And how about the Thimbleberries along the railroad tracks. Each visit I make, it changes, but somehow remains the same. The small town atmosphere, I love it. It truly is a place to believe in!!!

By Robert Abramson Livonia, MI on Thursday, March 14, 2002 - 10:18 am:

I have many great memories of driving to Chassell with my parents to visit my father's mother. (She used to live in the old post office next to the Fire Department.) Still miss seeing all that snow. Don't miss picking berries.

My dad was on the championship teams those years that they won in the 50's...he talks about those years all the time! Now he lives in ann arbor, but his heart stays in Copper Country!

By Carla, Michigan on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 09:27 pm:

My grandparents lived in Chassell. My brother and I lived with them for about 1 1/2 years in the 50's. Remember riding the train.
The house is still owned by my aunt. My kids love to go up there still. (But we don't make it very often.
