Erik or Charlie, this looks like 5th Street, looking up toward Pine, in the 300 block. The Central Motel could be where the Foresters building is now, with the D&N building further up on the left. Is this right? It's a lot easier to deal with the snow when you don't have to remove it...

By Larry-IN on Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 03:40 pm:

Now thats a Houghton/ Hancock winter to be proud of!!

By Robin, MI on Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 04:04 pm:

Does anyone know why we aren't getting the amounts of snow we used to? Today's kids are cheated in this area.

By Jim Edwards on Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 05:54 pm:

Living in NC now we don't get to see snow like that anymore.

Graduated from MTU in 1958.

By Christy, Brownstown, MI on Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 08:10 pm:

Where exactly is this?

By lyssa on Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 08:59 pm:

global warming

That's why we don't get snow like this anymore...
and we know what that is from too.

By DW on Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 09:26 pm:

Granted this has been a poor year for snow, but last year was good, and it was only a couple of years ago that had the second highest snowfall on record!!

BEING A DISPLACED YOOPER I CAN RELATE WITH SUCH SNOW BUT NOT QUITE THAT EXTREME.

I have many winter pictures in my family collection that was past on to me when my past away a couple years ago.

When you look at these pictures with so much snow still on the streets. We must realize that there was not the egiupment back the to remove the snow like there is today.

granted we don't get the snow as we did, but in the picture above may have been taken in mid to late march. I can only guess. I will check my photos to see if any have dates.

By Win Tucker New Jersey on Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 11:51 pm:

Hi Julie - Go to the "Copper Range Railroad"
site listed on the Pasty.com home page.
click on "History & Photos" - scroll down to
the "School Train" section. If you need more info
I'm sure Kevin Musser could help you out. It's a good start.

By B.Eddy Michigan on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 09:00 am:

Great Shot! I like snow but that is a little much LOL. Houghton/ Hancock is really a winter wonderland.Thank you for the memory's.

By Kevin, troll-land on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 10:04 am:

The snow falls up there are of similiar scale to what they used to be, just that it is all trucked out of the downtown area by dump trucks. This may be a light year, but it is not nearly the lightest. Check out the following site and you will see that there was, on average, much lighter snowfalls at the turn of the century than there are now.

http://www.admin.mtu.edu/alumni/snowfall/

Oh, and Lyssa, so long as the temperatures are consistently below freezing, global warming would have the opposite effect on snowfall as the lakes would be warmer and more water would evaporate into the atmosphere, thus causing larger snow falls. It bugs me when people try to attach everything they see as wrong in the world with a particular issue, regardless of whether there is any actual connection.

For the record, I do believe that there is an overall trend of increase in the global tempuratures over the last century (this has been proven), but there still isn't any proof that it isn't just a natural cycle (think of the ice ages).

Julie--it might help if you post your email address.

By Mary on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 10:44 am:

Catherine--Just click on Julie's name and her email address will automatically pop up. At least it does on mine! :)

By Ryan in Austin on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 11:57 am:

Kevin, thanks for helping Lyssa and for being skeptical. There has been a temperature increase over the last century of about 1°C, and most of that was in the first half of the last century, when the measurement means were less accurate and less precise. I am _extremely_ skeptical of the entire global warming farce. They were holding global conferences in the 70's on ...what? On the threat of global cooling, that's what!

Anyways, thanks to the sources for the great pics! You keep me in wallpaper!

By Jason in, very mild today, Houghton on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 12:28 pm:

The latest testing done at the ice caps actually showed that the ice caps have gotten THICKER, so they are not melting away as some people would try and get you to believe. The aforementioned chart that Kevin mentioned is interesting, it shows some winters a long time ago with much less snow than this winter. Everything goes in cycles.

By Rick Karl, Wisconsin on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 02:49 pm:

Does ANYONE have the lyrics to the "Heikki Luunta Snow Dance Song..." that we used to sing at Ripley Ski Area????

By Jean on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 03:42 pm:

Hi Rick is this what you remember?

HEIKKI LUNTA

From Da Yoopers 1991 release,
"Yoopy do Wah"

1. I REMEMBER BACK IN ‘58 WHEN I WAS JUST A LAD
I WENT UP TO THE COPPER COUNTRY HUNTING WITH MY DAD
THE GROUND WAS BARE AND FROZEN SO WE COULDN’T TRACK NO DEER
SO MY OLD MAN GOT HIS KNAPSACK AND HE FILLED IT UP WITH BEER
HE SAID WE GOTTA TAKE A HIKE WAY OUT IN THE WOODS
THERE’S THIS GUY NAMED HEIKKI LUNTA HE’S CRAZY BUT HE’S GOOD
WE’LL LET HIM DRINK A COUPLE BEERS AND WHEN HE STARTS TO GLOW
HE’LL DO THE HEIKKI LUNTA DANCE AND THEN JUST WATCH IT SNOW

CHORUS:
DANCE, DANCE, DANCE HEIKKI LUNTA DANCE
MAKE IT SNOW, SNOW, SNOW HEIKKI LUNTA SNOW
DANCE, DANCE, DANCE HEIKKI LUNTA DANCE
2. I REMEMBER IT WAS CHRISTMAS EVE 15 YEARS AGO
ALL THE KIDS WERE CRYING CAUSE THEY DIDN’T HAVE NO SNOW
ACCORDING TO THE WEATHERMAN THEY DIDN’T HAVE A CHANCE
BUT THE WEATHERMAN DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE HEIKKI LUNTA DANCE
HEIKKI PUT HIS SNOWSHOES ON AND GRABBED A CAN OF BEER
HE PUT ON HIS GIANT PARTRIDGE WINGS AND ANTLERS FROM A DEER
THEN HE GRABBED A CEDAR BRANCH AND DANCED AROUND THE YARD
EVERYBODY SAID THEY NEVER SEEN IT SNOW SO HARD

3. I RECALL A TOURNAMENT OUT AT SUICIDE
ALL THE SNOW WAS MELTING AND WE COULDN’T GET A RIDE
ONE CRAZY FINN CAME DOWN THE HILL AND LANDED ON THE ROCKS
THEY SENT HIM BACK TO FINLAND IN A HOMEMADE CEDAR BOX
WE LOOKED FOR HEIKKI LUNTA BUT HE WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND
WE COULDN’T DO NO JUMPING WITH NO SNOW ON THE GROUND
IT WAS CARL PELLONPAA WHO FINALLY SAVED THE DAY
WE DID THE HEIKKI LUNTA DANCE I THINK IT SNOWED TILL MAY

CHORUS:
DANCE, DANCE, DANCE HEIKKI LUNTA DANCE
MAKE IT SNOW, SNOW, SNOW HEIKKI LUNTA SNOW
DANCE, DANCE, DANCE HEIKKI LUNTA DANCE

I WENT THROUGH MY PICTURES AND FOUND A NEWSPAPER CLIPPING FROM MARCH 18 1965. THIS CLIPPING WAS TAKEN ON SIXTH STREET

By Dwayne on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 - 09:21 pm:

It seems I recall the bath in the forground from a former life. I may have died from food poisoning while eating a bowl of clamchowder from the joint several steps down. Yea, it snowed alot that year.

re: email for Julie
Not everyone has functioning Outlook Express, OK?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 - 07:35 am:

Catherine -

Julie did post her email address along with her name, but she did not repeat it in the body of her message. In most browsers, if you move your mouse pointer over the name above each message, you will see the email address on the status line at the bottom of the browser window (if the author entered it). If you have any default mail program defined (not necessarily Outlook Express), by clicking on that name it will pop up a new message window, conveniently adressed to the individual.

Try it by clicking on my name above this message. Send me a note and I will be glad to pass along your return address to Julie. If that doesn't work on your computer, here's my address to manually enter it: chopper@pasty.com

By bob b. wis on Thursday, February 21, 2002 - 09:02 am:

no that is not the HEIKKI LUNTA SNOW DANCE SONG,I know HEIKKI personly and have an original 45 of the song.

By bob b on Thursday, February 21, 2002 - 01:20 pm:

DA YOOPERS probably don't even know Heikki Lunta, he's not even from the Ishpeming area. He's from the Copper County north of Hancock and if you notice the Yoopers song is Heikki Lunta Dance not Heikki Lunta "Snow" Dance Song. I think I read those lyrics while watching his kids in the late 60's

By Alanna, MN on Monday, February 25, 2002 - 09:28 pm:

i have to agree with bob b. that is not the original Heikki Lunta Snow Dance song. i know where you got the other song though. i have a tape of that with some other songs on it, including Rusty Cheverlet. I can't tell you whether or not if they're from one tape or record, but i have them on only one tape. My uncle played the original Heikki Lunta snow dance song on the radio one time in Ely. i have that on tape.

By R.K.J. on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 - 09:49 am:

For the price of $2.00 one can purchase the original Heikki Lunta snow song and the Heikke Lunta go away song on a 45rpm record from WMPL P.O.Box 547, Hancock, Michigan 49930 This was shown on Pasty Cam aprox 1/12/02 in article about Heikinpaiva 2002 Mid Winter Festival.

By Bob B on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 - 01:30 pm:

Thank you Alanna,MN and RKJ. I believe WMPL was the 1st station to play and sell Heikki's record in the 60's and Heikki still plays every once and a while but doesn't play his hit song so to keep his identity a secret.

By RKJ on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 - 10:26 pm:

The radio station still has 45s available I just ordered and recieved one myself. Next problem a player to play it on.

By bob b. Mad town on Monday, March 11, 2002 - 03:19 pm:

Check out the Heikinpaiva 2002 on the Home page, Heikki Lunta's real name is not a secret anymore, good story and true. He still jams once in while, sometimes down at the Post 90 in Lake Linden.
