Your daily window on the U.P. presents the view across the icy waters of Lake Superior to the Pictured Rocks. We've been here before in the summer, but it's quite a different world this time of year.

We are still considering the possibility of the Pasty Cam expanding to include multiple daily shots from several regions around the U.P. We invite any amateur (or professional) photographers to contact us if you are interested in becoming a regular contributor from your region. Thanks to Bruce from Munising for sharing this rugged scene.

wow! awesome shot Bruce!

By Rose - Channahon, IL on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - 08:08 pm:

If you expand to show more of other areas of the U.P. please be sure we still get plenty of shots of the Keweenaw County - my favorite part of Michigan.

By Ken, Kalamazoo, MI on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - 08:19 pm:

I think it would be neat to have pics from other parts of the UP also, but, like Rose says, make sure we get lots of shots from the Keweenaw.

By Karen in Oshkosh, WI on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - 09:53 pm:

My daughter told me that the Keweenaw was in a Jeopardy answer today..."What is Lake Superior?" was the question.

By Ken from da UP on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - 11:36 pm:

The answer was, The Keweenaw peninsula juts out into which deepest fresh water body. Of course Mimi and I knew it was Lake Superior. :o) We were at the Valente Center in Ishpeming this aft. playing and singing with Kilpela and Friends for the nice folks there. A nice time and a nice lunch. :o)

Awesome photo...and great idea to spread the cam around....just not TOO much, OK??? We love our Keweenaw!

By Curious on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 07:48 am:

Ken,

Did the contestants know the answer?

By Carol, IN, formerly MI on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 08:06 am:

Beautiful, and one of my favorite UP places.

By mary,nc on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 08:18 am:

That looks like Miner's Castle not to many miles from where I grew up.....where is the ice?

By bp on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 11:09 am:

yes show more of the keweenaw county..i wish i was there living too..bp

By Yooper in Indiana on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 01:13 pm:

Can never get enough of the Keweenaw!

By Ken from da UP on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 01:56 pm:

To Curious, Yes, they did know it was Lake Superior. :o) Smart kids.

By Ryan in Austin, TX on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 03:53 pm:

Something somewhere is amiss. Lake superior, at 1302 ft. deep, is the deepest of the Great Lakes, but it's far from being the deepest fresh water body. Great Slave Lake is 2015 ft. deep, and Lake Baikal is 5371 ft. deep (internet resources, I didn't measure them myself). Not that it's important.

I appreciate the pictures, thanks.

By Wondering ! on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 05:05 pm:

If not the deepest, maybe the biggest as far as surface is concerned. ?

By Aimee, MTU on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 05:56 pm:

I have heard a few different things... mostly its because people say "what's the biggest lake?" and they don't specify if you're measuring surface area, depth, or volume. Lake Superior and Lake Baikal are both the biggest in some way. I'd tell you which is which but by this time I have confused myself too much!

By Paul, da U.P. on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 06:09 pm:

I've got a question for anyone who can answer it. I recently came across a picture of Rev. Frank. N Miner, a pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Dollar Bay, MI. The church is now Bethany Baptist and has been for quite a few years. I was just wondering if anyone would know of this man. I'm going to Michigan Tech's library to look but I always like hearing from people as well because they might offer some facts that books couldn't. If you can ofer any info email me at grizzlyadams@pasty.com. Thanks!

Thank You for this beautiful shot. Been looking for some good pics of Pictured Rocks. Wanting to get the family up that way, they've not seen much past the Straits area. Michigan[U.P.] has such variety, more cams would be great!!!!!

By Robert, CO on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 07:26 pm:

ObCompliment: Great picture! The Jeopardy answer did identify the deepest of the *Great Lakes*, not just the deepest fresh-water lake. Alex even pronounced 'Keweenaw' correctly! Being from the eastern end of the UP myself, I'd love to see more pictures from that area... not that the Keweenaw shots aren't great! I often log in to the Soo Locks web cam, even now when no ships are moving, just to get a peek at 'home.' It looks COLD today......

By Mary Ann, WY on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 07:57 pm:

What a beautiful photo of Pictured Rocks. I have many good memories of driving M94 from Manistique to Munising. I sure am glad I grew up in the UP.

By SnowHawg Rich on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 09:43 pm:

The U.P., the greatest place to ride diverse types of terrain! We're doing the "Snow Dance" to improve the conditions.

By Roy B - Tennessee on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 11:10 pm:

I have been told that you could take the rest of the Great Lakes and pour them into Lake Superior and it would hold them all. That would be because of the depth of Lake Superior, I guess. The other Great Lakes are shallow in comparison. Does anyone know for a fact that this statement would be true? Has anyone ever done the appropriate volume calculations to check it out?

Read this Overview, it will answer the burning question !

By ShawnR, MI on Thursday, February 14, 2002 - 08:34 am:

I love this picture. An occasional picture outside the Keeweenaw is fine, but the Keeweenaw is where my heart is!
