A few weeks ago Rob Wetton had a great shot of the Portage Canal and Lift Bridge from a different vantage point than we normally see. Now Rob has done it again with another popular Copper Country icon. Not quite sure where he is standing to take this (perhaps a helicopter?), but it captures the sunrise just right against the mine shaft.

The Lift Bridge shot made it to Wallpaper of the Week, and it looks like this would make another good one in that collection.

Like the glow of the Olympic torch,,,

It's shocking to see how little snow this year in the Copper Country. Look at those houses. You can actually see the first floor windows &^]

We just got home from a few days at Winter Carnival and the statues were gorgeous. But the sunrises and the beautiful blue sky the last few days were the most magnificent things to see. It was great to be back in the Keweenaw again.

Hey, Dave and cousin Rob, besides living in Woodside/Dollar Bay when I was a kid, in 1948 we lived to the far right in the above photo right somewhere around where the 2 big pine trees can be seen! We rented one of the old Calumet & Hecla company houses. As I remember it was $7.50 a month rent! It was right on the corner of the road that comes down from the hiway (41) and the short one that goes to the big steam hoist building.I think the tan house shown on the "Whats New" page of the Quincy Mine link was our next door neighbors! My brother Bob & I have lots of fond childhood memories in that area! There was an old foot path about where the tram is now that we took down to the old "A&P" in Hancock and then all the way back up home with the groceries!

No Charlie, I wasn't in a helicopter. Just Econo Foods parking lot. Needed a lot of zoom though.

Hei, young Rob W,
What a beautiful shot of Quincy #2. Econo Foods in Houghton? What a camera! As a young'un I lived in Paavola, not far from #2. Very nostalgic for me to see that old rockhouse.

Love this site..Rented house 68thru70 in Lower Pewabic, from Quincy Mining Co;$75.oo month. Haven't been back to Keewanaw since, but am visiting this summer, and can't wait. My favorite thing is to have house guests get on this site with me.

My grandfather Alfred Tuovila worked in the Quincy mine. Whenever I visit my family in Laurium, the sight of the mine is the first indication that I am almost home. Now I can be almost home every time I turn on my computer and see this wallpaper. Thank you!

I would love to check this out next time I am in the UP. I go every year to the UP and try to find something to look at each time..
