Ben Kilpela is no stranger to the fury of Lake Superior. During warmer times he shares the duties as Captain of the Isle Royale Queen III. Ben captured this eruption during a recent visit along the shore at Sedar Bay.

The Kilpela's have been special friends to Still Waters over the years, often treating our residents to a fall color tour on the Queen. Our thanks to the whole family :o)

It's 38 degrees and sunny in Pinckney today and our January thaw has melted the last of the snow in my yard. I must say I prefer seeing winter's fury on the PastyCam to seeing it on my driveway, especially in a photo like this! Thanks!

We have grass here too in East Lansing and it is 43 degrees in the shade ....small patches here and there of the white stuff but 99% of it is gone...And the grass is kinda green..strange for January.

Watching the Isle Royale Queen III departing and returning is one of my favorite things to do when in Copper Harbor. Of course better than that is the Sunset Cruise on the Queen. I have taken so many pictures of the Queen, starting back when it was the Queen II (you could hear the sound of her diesel engines when she approached the harbor when we camped at Fort Wilkins) I even taped the sound of her whistle so I can hear it at home. We will be back again this summer, can't wait!

Ya know, wwwwwwaaaaayyyyyy back when I was bartending at the Mariner North up in Copper Harbor, our boss Don Kauppi, rented the IRQ to take the "Harbor Rats" on a sunset cruise. We were well packed with party supplies, and we had one heckuva time. THAT is a ride that is a must for anyone that is able to access it! It is truly one of the "gems" of the Keweenaw! Thanks to then Captain Don Kilpela and of course, to Don Kauppi, who was one of our "Earth Angels" when we needed him! Bless you both! :)

Well, I watched the IRQ come into rock harbor when I was living on Isle Royale in the early 60s and even the late 50s. Then it was shorter and bright yellow. I also remember the IRQ before that. As I remember it was a fish tug. Now I live in Colo. Nothing like the lake here I tell you! I do miss the lake but the mountains have thier own beauty! Very nice pictures!
