Ever notice the low-resolution and quality of most webcams? This year's Heikinpäivä 2002 will be brought to you in high resolution living color from the Finlandia campus. Actually, it's the view from the window of the Finnish-American Reporter, and the scene will be updated every few minutes, beginning Wednesday.

As a bonus, we will be archiving every frame, so we can assemble a "time-lapse" view of the construction when it's finished. Tune in to the Bridge Cam page when the updates begin!

What kind of camera is being used? Just curious.

The live web cam is our old Kodak DC-260, which has taken tens of thousands of shots throughout the U.P., and feels right at home above Northwind Books, in the office next to Finnish American Reporter.

That camera has been through a lot! Almost 2 years ago Jonathan and I were up on Bumbletown Hill around sunset, and we had a little accident. In the dusky darkness Jonathan tripped on some low fence wires and stumbled and fell... right on top of the Kodak. It may have saved his life, because it's very rocky on the Hill. The camera was smashed apart, but we tucked all the parts back in the case, rigged up a shutter switch (which had been broken off) and it has worked great ever since. Hundreds of the shots you see in the Pasty Cam archives were from this camera.

So now the old Kodak has been "retired" to serve as a high resolution webcam. Side note: Somewhere I have a recording made during that fateful evening of the accident on Bumbletown Hill, and maybe I can dig it out for a real audio clip some time, if anyone would be interested.

You sure that picture wasn't taken some place in North Carolina or Atlanta? Where's the snow?

Hanky, it's not the same house. You're thinking of the PHI TAU house. It's still there and the brothers are going strong. (I'm not sure about the dog) This house is on Soumi's (oops Finlandia's) campus closer to downtown Hancock, across from Gemignani's famous Italian restaurant.
