And what a Dec. it has been. We have more snow here thanI have seen in ages. Have to check your site every nite. Can't wait until I visit the U.P. again this summer. Happy New Year.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, December 31, 2000 - 10:07 pm:

Once again we pause to remember several individuals who had a special connection with the people of the U.P.

Lucille Moyle
Hubert Kunnari
Margaret Hogback
William "Gus" Piirala
Florence Rinfrette

One of these folks, Hubert Kunnari, lived with his brother Pee Wee here at Still Waters. Known as "Hoobee", you could often see him strolling down to Fraki's, or walking his brother to the dining room. A quiet man, easy to get along with... Hoobee passed away suddenly earlier this month.

Instead of writing about the others myself, I trust that some friends will leave a memory or two on this page.

Have a happy, healthy New Year.

Charlie,

Will you please post the Name Dorothy "Dutu" Maninga on the Pasty Cam remembrance list?

She was a life long resident of Ahmeek and passed away Dec 19.

(We added Dorothy's name to the Archive page. Thanks for the note, Sue.)

Got the news through a Christmas card that Elizabeth Vivian, beloved English teacher at Houghton High School, had passed away. Can anyone out there tell me when? So many of us remember her with fondness and appreciate how she was dedicated to preparing us to do our best,no matter what we went on to after HS graduation.

Although she wasn't a resident at Still Waters, I'd still like to remember the passing this past year of my grandmother-in-law, Lucille Strieter. She died before she could she her latest great grandchild. Fortunately, my grandmother is still alive and we were able to get a four generation picture at Matthew's baptism.

Any Yooper remedies for this blasted cold I have?

Too much snow? Here in Milwaukee we had 49.5 inches for the month of December. Only 5 days in the month didn't see white precip coming from the sky. I realize in da UP 49.5 inches is just a good day's snowfall, but it's a lot for Milwaukee.

Please list my Great-aunt, Sophie VanHala (Halmekangas), in your memorial. she passed on Christmas eve morning to join her family in Heaven. She grew up in the shadow of the QMC No. 2 mine, one of a large family. Her sister, my grandmother, still calls Hancock her home.

The name of your late Great-aunt has also been included on the archive page.

Miss Vivian died August 23, 2000. She was born October 14, 2000. A great lady and teacher. I had her in 1964 and she was very instrumental in guiding me to my nursing career.

Thank you to the person who sent me the Vivian obituary, but that was not the one I was looking for. Elizabeth Vivian was never married. She retired from HHS at least 15-20 years ago. Nephew Jim Vivian lives in Eagle River.
