We had a very unique event in the valley this weekend. It got down to 2 degrees and steam rising off the open waters of Torch Lake caused a thick fog. That fog then caused a very heavy frost to form on almost everything. Illustrations all around us, just how unigue the Keweenaw is.

Simply gorgeous! God's beautiful works of art. I love them. Thank you so much. Wish I could be back "home" to see that for myself.

John t's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Wow when you woke to this you must have felt like you were in another world. Total magic, keep your camera at close range so that the rest of us can enjoy your world.

By Larry-IN on Monday, December 4, 2000 - 09:23 am:

Hi John...great shot! As I posted earlier in the month this REALLY reminds me of "ice fog" that used to develop on US-2 between Gladstone & St. Iggy. Much nicer to look at it rather than drive in it!!! If it is cold enough for ice fog LES is sure to follow with any breeze!!!

By Ellie, San Diego, CA on Monday, December 4, 2000 - 10:00 am:

Just did my morning check of the pictures. It's beautiful !!! Miss the beauty but not the cold & driving through it.

By Wayne Texas on Monday, December 4, 2000 - 11:09 am:

Please tell JOhn Dee to keep up the beautiful work. Got up this morning, and as usual home sick for the u.p. and boy was this a slap. Hope my day improves. ha ha ha. Hope to be back soon.

Yeah, to enjoying the pictures, but not missing the cold and DRIVING in it!! Lived in Grand Rapids one year, and I was always either blocked in when the snow plow went through, or in a ditch needing a tow truck. They didn't plow very well, and the snowbase was hard to drive on. I was a new driver, having just graduated from college where we couldn't have cars, and totally inexperienced as a driver, much less a driver in snow!

These pictures are wonderful! You can feel the cold.

OK, I give up, Larry IN. What's LES? - 'sure to follow with any breeze'.... Love the "heavy frost"....and I do miss the beautiful scenes...in spite of the driving. However, is there anything quite so "comfortable" as a warm car, good music, sunny blue skies, new snow melting off the roadway, and snowbanks nearly over the car roof...on the way to pick up pasties! - aside from having them delivered to your door from Stillwater!

What a capturing you do of the UP's moods. Thats what I love about the Upper Pennisula...The whole UP is a unique event. Especially in the winter it truley is a Winter Wonderland. I miss the UP and driving in the snow. We use to take road trips especially when it snowed!

Oh, I remember schooling at NMU and walking to class with the wind and the water blowing SO HARD, that my face would be swollen from injury by the time I returned to the dorms! I remember walking to class wondering how other people made it through college not being able to see Lake Superior every day, smelting, going to hockey games, seeing the northern lights, and 300 inches of snow each year. I grew up in MI, and spent a small portion of it in the UP, but it will always be a part of me, and be with me...Forever.

To 'Mary-MI' - Thanks for reply! The instant AFTER I hit "send" - I knew the answer. Living only 30 miles East of Lake Michigan I really DO know that LES pileup can truly be a shovelful! Just having a "senior moment" I guess! HAPPY HOLIDAYS, Y'ALL=('Trollese' for "YOU GUYS")!

Hey John...GREAT pictures! That was a gorgeous morning. Took a drive when the sun came out and it was just breathtaking! Everything looked like this! Had to take time out to say "Thank you God".

By Jeff a permanent resident on Thursday, December 7, 2000 - 04:07 pm:

Another day I look around me and thank God for what we have here in this beautiful country we call the U.P. We are truly blessed, from the glitter of snow crystals on a crisp winter morning.
To a sunset over Lake Superior that only God could create.

By Barb L'Anse, Mi. on Saturday, December 9, 2000 - 12:44 am:

Absolutely wonderful, the frost picture. Just bumped in to check on where the fire was. Glad the pets were safe. Hope all living above or around are ok. The snow pictures are super. Thanks John. Applaud THE ARTIST!! I do that every time I look towards BARAGA at the beautiful sunsets. My favorite saying. "Oh, what a view!"

OOOOOOhhh.....AAAAHHHHH...WOW!

By Lee Florida on Saturday, December 9, 2000 - 02:09 pm:

What a beautiful site. I am just sorry that when I lived in the UP, I didn't appreciate all the beauty around all year long. Miss it now, for sure, and really enjoy this site to bring me closer to the UP.
