If you've been watching the Pasty Cam for more than a couple of years, you may recall Elmo's Tower, which we watched being constructed in the Fall of '98. Today as I drove past this spot, across from the Phoenix store, the cliffs and hillside appeared to be sugar coated with fresh snow. If you look reeeally close you can see the wind generator Elmo installed to harness the breezes on top of the ridge.

Back in the summer a group of campers from Gitche Gumee were treated to a tour of the tower by Elmo himself. One of the seven wonders of the yooper world:

Exactly what is Elmo's Tower? We passed it a few times this summer and are very curious about it.

No, really...who's Elmo? We've only been coming to the Keeweenaw for 40 years, so we don't know everyone yet.

Everyone knows Elmo!! Elmo's place is one of my favorite places to visit. He's an interesting man. He's not afraid to try anything!

Who is Elmo? By gosh Elmo is the the epitome of the Keweenaw native. A genius of improvisation, practicality, aesthetics and just plain fun. He has been making things for so long with so little that he is now capable of making anything from nothing. He is also a legendary dancer.

The only question is, What will he think of next?

Go Elmo!

Is the tower open to anyone or just for private tours?

By Strap in Alabama on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 - 09:29 am:

Elmo, is Elmo Negro whose roots are in Phoenix. By trade he is an electrition and also served in WORLD WAR 2 and is one of the persons you might have found in Tom Brokaw's "THE GREATEST GENERATION". His retired days find his new career as a TOP POLKA DANCER. You might want to refer to him as a dance hall lizard.

Elmo's Tower looks like a good place for St. Elmo's Fire!

I concur with everyone's judgment of Elmo as a phenomenal dancer- he and my mom ripped up the floor at the Cliffview one night dancing to the old numbers on the jukebox. I'm surprised he didn't do a back-handspring onto the pool table. Like many of the other people in Keweenaw County, he is a gem.
Thanks for the shots of his tower!
Hyvää iltapäivää,
Hilary Virtanen

Yes, but an elegant ripping at that!
Thank you, Sir!
