Out on the Peninsula the colors are gettting good, while here in Hancock it still looks like Summer. In this mega-pixel shot of Hancock, you see a little color beginning to appear. In a couple of weeks we'll take another look.

Senior Pasty Camist Jon Hopper snapped this while waiting in the drive through at Hardee's, on the Houghton side. He has a new camera: a Fuji S-1 with all the bells and whistles. The first Pasty Cam in 1998 was a Sony Mavica, followed in '99 by a Kodak DC-260, which was smashed when Jon cushioned his fall up on Bumbletown Hill this summer. (Sometime we'll have to tell you THAT story :o)

Let's hope the new Pasty Cam meets a gentler fate.

You know, the Ambassador Bar in Houghton has a picture window with a view of the mine just like this. Are you SURE it was taken at the Hardee's. Of course, I've never been in that place, Bernard and Milton Verville told me about it!

The view is of East Hancock, and my wife's grandmother, Cele Watson, lived there. According to my wife, Marcia Verville Walker, the sign about breathing the cleanest air now at Copper Harbor used to be posted at the top of her street in East Hancock.

I highly recommend the tour of Quincy Mine. My husband, sister and I took our kids (ages 3-13) and they really enjoyed it. They still talk about the mine and ask when we can go back. We took the time to wander around the abandoned building foundations and the kids climbed around and explored for a couple of hours. I think it is great that those areas are not "off-limits". I know that when we go up in October again they will beg to play there!

Interesting about the sign being in Hancock. As long as I can remember it was on U.S. 41 before you got to Chassell. Were there more than once sign or was it moved? Time for you Historians to kick in here.

Fantastic view, recognized the Quincy Mine up in the corner right away. We have been coming up to the Keweenaw almost every year since 1968! Can't get enough of that wonderful area.

I taught the sign was located on US 41 before entering Michigan Tech. Since I was born and raised on Bumbletown Hill, I, also would like to hear that story!

I agree with Florida about the sign down near Chassell. I believe it was between Chassell and Houghton as you headed north on U.S. 41.

Yes, the sign was always just before you got to Michigan Tech's campus...going North on US 41. I lived in Chassell for 15 years & attended Michigan Tech back in the late 70's...so I saw that sign *every day* for years. Was it really in Hancock a *long, long* time ago?
